First of all - I’m sorry. I was laid off end of last year and had to fight hard to not take it as a personal indication of my talents. As others have said it’s important to kick start the unemployment filing process right now given the large volume of applicants. Once you have that in place I’d recommend taking a bit of time to deal with what just happened (Talking to people, reading a book, running, eating your favorite food, etc) Once you’re comfortable with what happened connect with your personal and professional network. You’d be surprised to hear how many people were in your shoes and rebounded just fine. Ask them what skills are in high demand and build those up. Another step I’d recommend is setting a tight budget for the foreseeable future. It’s a challenging time but you will get out of this if you keep a positive energy.

I got laid off too. Just take a moment to process. Allow yourself some freedom to breath, and then yes file for unemployment as soon as possible, and remember this is happening to many many people who are in this same boat with you. We’re smart people. We’ll work something out. One day at a time.

You don’t have to do anything TODAY. Take some time to grieve and do a little bit each day for job search, but take it easy. Time and your career were not built in a day.

Treat yo self, you worked hard during 2020 and its unfair they laid you off now. Don’t do shit today and know that your work experience will get you a job after this all said and done.

Can I apply for unemployment? How do I do that? Where do you look for information? How are any of you navigating this? I don’t know where to begin, either emotionally or practically.

Does anyone know if you need any sort of paperwork/backup when applying for unemployment to prove your lay-off was COVID-19 related to qualify for additional aid?

Dude I've been laid off three times in my career. It's not life ending, and I always found the nx thing was better for me both personally and professionally. Treat getting a new job as you new job, with severance your pay for that job. Make a plan, work at it every day, leverage your network, be proactive, know that not every application will result in a callback, and trust that you are a capable person. You just need to sell yourself. I will also say that recruiters are always slammed, so if you really want your application to get attention, find a referral in the company and use them. Also search LinkedIn for recruiters at the company and message them directly. The squealy wheel gets noticed.

I’m very sorry to hear that. I heard through the grapevine today was D-Day for layoffs at Crowe. My firm laid off people yesterday, and we still have no idea how many people were cut and what service line they were from. My firm is trying to save face and say layoffs will be “performance-related.” I’m not sure if the rank and file are buying that argument.

like

I’ve seen firms get very tough on “performance” when the economy tanks so they can try to pretend these aren’t widespread layoffs to conserve cash Kills morale regardless

I’m So sorry OP! Hope they gave you a decent redundancy payout? Give yourself sometime to digest the news then start acting quickly. There are companies still hiring and try to think of where your skills are transferable and be open to trying different career paths too. Stay strong x

One of the primary aims of the criminal justice reform movement is to help ex-convicts re-enter the workforce by sealing criminal records, and making it more difficult for employers to judge applicants based on criminal history. The idea is that people are redeemable and capable of reform. Yet the same movement thoroughly enjoys getting people fired and publicly shaming them for making arguments they find “offensive”. A rapist is capable of reform, but not someone who makes a dumb tweet. Got it.

Genuine question: why do people bill over 2100 in this market? I can see how wanting to be a “good associate” could get you to agree to go slightly above your hours requirement, but don’t understand how people end up billing 2500+ hours… do you really think you’d get fired if you said no to more work? Is someone legitimately forcing you to work that much? Don’t see how extra bonuses are worth it either.

Projects are sized with an aggressive timeline. However clients will take their time to respond, meet since they know they won’t get fired easily for not prioritizing the project (as they have the actual day job to focus on). How does Partner just blindly accept this fact and still want an aggressive timeline? On paper they’d say it’s client issue but still want it done ‘on time’, on budget.
