Well, if you're putting 50% for family expenditure and 50% for a rainy day fund, that's 100% of your money. So you left nothing for yourself. What you need to do is sit down and figure out the right percentage that allows you to feel secure but able to have a little fun. You deserve it!

Yeah, I need to know what’s a general percentage to keep for yourself. I’m pathetic at finances but now I need to be more in control

I would say between 5-10% is a good treat yourself fund. This includes a coffee or a new shirt. Whatever makes you feel good :)

Thank you:) this is very helpful

What are your priorities? What things do you care about most in life? It could be family, hobbies, career, house, car, etc. The most important thing should get the biggest percentage based on ratio. You can get 300 dollar socks if socks are your biggest priority and you can get 2000 dollar cooking pots if that’s what you care about but if you are buying both then you could will end up broke.

Keep 10% to take care of you and what you want. You earned it. You deserve it.

Personally, I'd keep 30% as a rainyday fund (which should still be enough to grow it healthily) and 20% for yourself. IMO if you're in a 2-income household and making decent money you wouldn't feel like you can't splurge on, say, starbucks everyday if that's what puts pep in your step. I know that's less conservative than some of the other responses here, but just my 2 cents.

I don’t keep a percentage of my salary for “not necessary” expenses. I just found a perfect balance between what I can afford and what I want. I’m saving much more money this way, because sometimes I don’t need anything. And I’m also happier now that my “not necessary” needs have become so manageable.

Personally, if we're talking about how to divide thy salary in percentage, I would prefer 30% invested, 20% savings, and split the rest between bills and discretionary spending.

Personally if we're talking about how to divide thy salary in percentage, I would prefer 50% savings, 30% bills, 10% wants, & 10% needs.

I set aside a dollar value (100$) instead of %. Most months I don’t spend it all, so it accumulates. When I switched jobs and doubled my TC, I increased my “me allowance” to 150$ too as a reward.

Draft a budget sheet that accounts for your expenses. Reference your past spending habits to see how much you should reserve for hobbies and happiness spending vs retirement and investments.

I am facing one of the most wild shifts in mindset ever — i always thought i wanted to be this super accomplished career driven woman, but all i care about these days is making enough money to buy more real estate and retire asap. I feel like a hypocrite some days, and somedays i’m willing to sacrifice job interests for higher salary and just get to my goal of early retirement though real estate. Can someone please tell me i’m not going crazy :( this duality is weird to deal with.
