Just made M at Accenture and will make $155k. I have an offer to join McKinsey as a BA for $90k. I do really like my team and projects at Accenture and was able to progress fairly accelerated to M at ACN (so maybe could keep it up for progression to SM?). But also I know how much people value the MBB brand. Thoughts?

If I were you, I’d turn down the BA offer, ask for an associate role or what that would takes They’ll either say yes or that you need more experience. If the latter professionally decline, note you’ll star at ACN to gain said experience and apply for the associate role in 1 yr. It’s the lowest risk path to a McK Associate role, which is what you should likely be getting.

I did something similar from a different consulting firm. Worth negotiating to see if they can bump you up to a higher BA tier. I was able to negotiate a 140ish salary to 160ish salary a few years back. Once at McK, I spent a year and a half learning a new toolkit before being promoted to EM within a few years (~250k LTM comp). I now am doing AP-work (e.g., ED’ing multiple studies) and trying to push out my promotion to have plenty of runway to make Partner. Surprised how many folks say to stay at Accenture. Pay and exit opportunities from McK is higher than Accenture at every level, obviously. Promotions are typically every 2-4 years. Yes, the salary delta seems large in percentage terms for a lower role vs M at Accenture. This a good thing, because it gives you runway to grow/learn at lower expectations. I would focus less on near-term salary and focus more on the future. Where do you want to go in 3-5 years? Which is better to set you up for success? How valuable is your network at Accenture that you will forgo compared to the likelihood of building a similar or better network at McK? At which would you be doing more exciting, meaningful work? Staying at Accenture may be best for you, but not because of the near-term title delta.

Time value of money. OP stay at Accenture. Also you run a higher risk of being counseled out at McKinsey. Then what?

You’re seriously considering taking an offer for 65K less per year? Why did u post this? 😂😂😂 #dontdoit

likefunnysmartuplifting

You’re considering taking a job strictly for the opportunities once you leave that job. I’m no guru on the path to ultimate success but I think there needs to be some further consideration on what besides money and exit opportunity is driving you to even begin looking for a new role. If it’s 3,5 and 10 compensation realize that sometimes money is expensive

Thanks everyone! This is super helpful and I’m staying at Accenture. Sorry, this app just make it seem like MBB is worth it at all costs

likefunnyupliftingsmart

S& that is not true lmao

I am really not sure if it’s worth going from M at Accenture to BA at Mck. What’s your total yoe? What kind of consulting do you do at ACN? Is that the work you want to do in the future as well?

likehelpful

Imo, stick to ACN. Manager in 5yrs is a feat in itself. You can probably make it to MD in next 5-7yrs. Thats some of the quickest progressions. Once you make leadership, brand would cease to matter and you can virtually jump anywhere.

Update: I asked McKinsey if they’d consider me for the post MBA role and they said no, they didn’t think I did well enough for that in interviews. I used the offer to leverage a $20k retention bonus at Accenture though

likeupliftingsmartfunny

Leveraging an offer for a 40% pay cut into a $20k paycheck is impressive.

😂 Don’t do it man. Exit opps from big 4 / acn can be good especially if you have some niche tech skills. I was an M at D a few years ago making 190k and moved to AMZN as an l6 at 250k. I am now an l7 making 360k. It’s a lot easier to join FAANG with niche tech skills vs strategy skills. I had mbb friends that couldn’t get into any FAANG due to the competition for the roles that strategy consultants apply for and the need for basic data skills like tableau, sql, python etc that many strategy consultants lack but are essential at AMZN.

Lol this is the part of the app where I find myself scratching my head. At the end of the day you’re in control of your success. You’d really rather make a $65k LESS decision because of brand??? Make that money and hit up McK further down the line. If they wanted you now they’ll want you later

like

Then it’s not meant to be. Simple as that.

like

Dude. Go back to McKinsey and negotiate for an Associate role. You have 5 YOE and making M at Accenture. They might say no, but it warrants a discussion. If you they agree the McKinsey all the way. Else, stay at Accenture!

like

This. I was a M at ACN that joined as an A at McK

like

You’re being low balled OP. I have 2.5 YOE and was offered a SBA role at McKinsey. I’d try to negotiate for JA or an A role. If that isn’t successful, stay at Accenture. It seems you like your team, projects and are valued. Resetting that is not worth it for MBB.

likehelpfulsmart

This definitely try to come in at the associate level (at least). That’s the post-MBA level and they should start you at $165-175k. It’s a level down but you could probably get time at level to have a speedy promo. Or you could consider Kearney! We need M-level lol.

like

Omg! Please don't. If you are in technology consulting, don't ever do it. You can easily get product or program roles in decent tech companies. Plus leaving all that experience to do pure business strategy work should be done only if you hate technology I guess.

Prestige doesn’t pay the bills

like

Show some self-respect and politely ask McK for a raise! Don’t bet against yourself by considering “prestige” as a material part of your compensation (and worth a $65K haircut no matter what the exit opps might be in the unforeseeable future).

As another poster said, salaries for a given level at McK are non-negotiable. Everyone in a given country makes the exact same amount and everyone knows what the amount is

I left McKinsey recently after 6 years. It is odd to me that you only got a BA offer with 5 YOE and a M title at Accenture. You should at least come in as an Associate which matches your current pay (all-in a bit higher). I’d definitely go back and ask for a higher title & pay. Don’t accept the BA offer but don’t simply walk away without negotiating

like

Do it. McKinsey will open many better doors for you than Accenture and your 5 year earning average will be higher. Also what’s the dollars delta between $90k and your SC level salary before $155k kicks in?

funny

This is insane. Don’t do it unless you can come in as associate. Accenture is a decent firm and MBB isn’t god. Ex-McK here for what it’s worth.

Were you an M when you interviewed or a consultant? If you were a C they may have thought they were only downloading leveling you one grade. I’d go back to recruiter and push for Associate at Mckinsey

I was a C when interviewing and getting the offer. Good point

OP, if you have more than 3 YOE you should ask if they would consider make you join as an ASC position. Entry level ASC in the US is 165k only base
