Just moved back to Chicago- so happy but we have a 2 year old that lives above us and wow running back and forth is LOUD. No idea if they have carpet or just hardwood but that’s the only complaint of my apartment- it’s just kind of jarring and super loud. Any advice? I’m moving from a single home pretty much to an apartment. Don’t know if I’m just overthinking this and I’ll get used to it.

I’m a parent of two boys 14 months apart (both under 4). One is what we call a ‘stomper’ - he has an insanely loud walk and run. It drives US crazy. *We sometimes have to stop talking he is so loud.

We try to get him to ‘be aware’ of his strength...he is almost 3; no success so far 🤷‍♀️ We have hardwood floors with rugs peppered throughout...it only breaks it up a bit. I think only a wall-to-wall carpet scenario might help, at this point.

Be nice to the parents above - there is likely very little they can do to teach/regulate (I say this because we have tried). If I were you, I would try to get to know them. Knowing the kid (and a nice parent) might lighten the irritation.

One thing my husband and I do for each other to ‘have a quiet morning’ is let the kids watch some tv so they are sitting for an extra 30 minutes or go for an early walk outside so the other can sleep in a bit. *These are not things you can directly ask the parent to do. Good luck.

He’s a mini brick house - you have no idea. 🤣

Sometimes it’s fixable if they pad under the carpeting but I’ve had friends who just become obsessed with it and no amount of padding will make it stop. Maybe just inquire and ask if they have carpeting or rugs there.

Thanks for the advice! We just moved in so I’m going to give it some time versus just asking immediately if they have carpet. Planning on getting them a bottle of wine or something with a note to be friendly . It will make us less assholes if we’re actually have to ask them if they have carpet

I have two kids and I’m so glad the neighbors below have been gracious to never complain. I do what I can (no shoes inside, rugs, attempts to regulate) but kids are, well, kids. It is stressful enough just worrying about annoying them that it makes me anxious at times. Can’t imagine if they actually complained. Especially since COVID. Preschool is closed. Playgrounds are closed. Zoos, museums, etc all limited or risky. Going to a friends house is risky. We are losing our damn minds so yeah they run around the living room at times. I feel like the general rule of thumb is don’t live in a unit with upstairs neighbors if you can’t handle noise. (And I have been the downstairs neighbor before too).

I fought with my old landlord about this for years. During construction, he skipped putting insulation between floors. I would say ask your landlord about that.

I make good money, own my own home, and if you keep it clean, cook me breakfast lunch and dinner every day, take care of the kids full time (like, I definitely love kids but would prefer being the "play catch and read them a bedtime story after their bath" parent) and take on all the family calendar planning and help manage my work stress, I promise to buy you cute sneakers and take you on awesome vacations at least once a year.

Have you ever recommended family to your law firm or to an attorney at the firm? My aunt and uncle are dealing with their fathers estate (turns out he had other children they didn't know about and they're struggling to establish who should get what and why). I don't want to do it myself but I thought it'd be a good idea to recommend them to another attorney at the firm. Is this a good idea or is it too messy to mix family and work?
