Just moved from small firm to big law—mid level litigator. Crickets the first two days while I awaited initial assignments. Not yet familiar with big firm life, so I thought I’d be careful and ask just two partners for work and see how it went. Since Saturday I’ve billed 10 hours a day. I definitely feel like saying my plate is full already, but will that look pathetic barely two weeks in?

If your plate is full, then it's full. Partners can tell by your hours billed, so they'll be able confirm availability vel non (i.e., whether you lied) later on. If you are billing 10 hours a day, then I'd say you're really busy and lack capacity for new matters.

I tend to say things like “Thank you for thinking of me for this project. I’d really like to work wirh you but I have xyz work to do and don’t have the bandwidth to add anything new to my workload.”

This is totally fine. We’ve had a few laterals recently and we’ve essentially fully staffed them before they even arrived. Everyone sort of expected it.

I moved to a mid-size commercial lit firm a month and half ago from a smaller firm where I had about 300 cases - still have no case list or work.

The partner who runs the major client for my office is “working on it” and has been since September 1…

Ok need thoughts without judgment. I have two kids in private school/1st grade. I felt they needed a good foundation and later move to public. For me its the smaller class room size, bilingual school, and the environment I felt they would thrive in.This meant a hit to my fin saving goals. I’m struggling on public to get back on track. It’s roughly 2800/m, that wouldn’t a straight save, we have learning challenges that will require more tutoring. Maybe at least 1200-1500 savings. Is this selfish?

Any estate lawyers here? Need some advice.
In minnesota. A friend is dying so we are trying to get her legal docs in place. Problem: she is still legally married to a leech/bum/drug addict, they have 3 kids (16, 18, 20). Dad steals money from the kids. They have been separated for 11 years (not legally). How can we ensure he has no legal right to any of her estate and her kids get everything. And social security? He cannot have access to it. Dire need of help right now, time is of the essence.

If I've moved to a completely different field than what I used to do, at what point do I remove all of my past career experience from LinkedIn? I fear I have trouble job searching because my experience doesn't look like a linear path when laid out on LinkedIn. I've kept it visible to avoid people assuming I have an employment gap when in reality I've never had one. Any thoughts on what to do here?

M&A senior here. Most days I feel like I’ve peaked with a ceiling of midlevel and feel like I can’t break through to that next step to truly lead deals independently. I have done it but always some partner backstop even if not a ton. Is it weird to think that maybe my limit is midlevel ability? If that’s the case, not sure how I’ll ever move upward or get better at it.

Partner snapped at me because I was on mute during an internal group call while searching for an answer to the partner’s question and typing notes. The only other associate on the call was shocked by the partner’s reaction. The rest of the call went normal. I am always polite and kind to others. Unfortunately, people like this partner are rude to me. I have always gone the extra mile for this firm/partner. Perhaps, I am too sensitive but these interactions hurt my soul. How can I toughen up?

Do you have PTOs as a lawyer at big law?
