I love how this conversation is happening in your workplace. It's not easy for HR, but it is way worse for the people being impacted by systemic racism. The conversation needs to continue especially if you expect authentic teamwork. People have to get comfortable having uncomfortable and respectful conversations. The only way they do that is to keep talking and learning and listening. It's not going to go away. You may want to offer your employees Crucial Conversations and Diversity 101 training.

Thanks for understanding! Yes, it’s hard, especially at this time, when most people are burnt out with working extra-hours from home, with homeschooling and taking care of relatives. I’m thinking of providing them with different trainings options. But I don’t want to make it mandatory, cause we have an annual training on discrimination, and cause honestly many people are gonna blow out, cause additional mandatory trainings will make their 40-60h workweek into 50-70h workweek
I’m a millennial and I work at a place which you have described, from my POV I have noticed that there are leaders who feel disconnected BUT say what they think we want to hear. My biggest issue is that no matter how good of an actor you can be, your genuine feelings are shown through your message. I cannot say I have an answer for you, however I’d say, be true to your feelings, and not just expressing what you feel like people want to hear. It honestly feels like a really big shut down especially if you are a person of color listening to a non-genuine message.

Sorry! I just read it, thank you for this answer, it makes a lot of sense!

On one side of the table I have younger employees who demand corporate activism, zero tolerance policy and many other things that are not business.
On the other side I have more mature employees who are convinced that revolutions never work (I 100% agree, my home country went through 3 revolutions during the past 20 years, and it only made it even poorer). And our more mature employees want segregation of a business as a place of work from everyone’s activism

And I don’t feel like they listen to each other and whenever I take anyone’s side on any specific issue I’m seen as a whole ally to that group, and another group refuses to hear me.
I’m telling people that there is no side and it’s not a competition, and they are like “sure, but what side are you really on?”

Well, when most of your revenue comes from various corporations and government contracts, you never know where direct support of BLM can backfire and when your support of BLM can backfire at them. If you look into history you’ll see that USSR support of anti-racism movements got them labeled as communism. It’s a election year, so if let’s say Mercedes supports BLM, I’m sure that many right wing media are gonna promote something like “Nazi support BLM”.
Also, I’m not saying that older generation is against BLM. They are against activism at the workplace, cause it distracts people from doing the work, and it makes people spending their working hours on something besides the work. Also, it creates political debates at the workplace, and political debates impact morale, people get offended or feel unheard, so they get demotivated. And it brings down productivity, and in the end everyone’s bonuses get affected.
Also, I never said that I’m shutting down everyone’s opinions. I said they I need to vent cause I’m listening to everyone’s opinions every single day, empathizing to everyone and getting people to come up with solutions.
The problem is that everyone wants to talk and express their opinions, and nobody wants to listen.
Younger generation doesn’t understand the struggle of an older generations. And vice versa.
Also, our black employees (younger and elder) are asking me to take our activists of their back, as they don’t really understand lives of black employees, but they want to be allies, even though they weren’t really interested before.
Suffrage movement was revolutionary (involving or causing a complete or dramatic change), but if it was a revolution we would have at least one female president now.
