Just need to vent. Raise your hand if you would be annoyed that you had to drive into work in a snowstorm, the week of Thanksgiving, during a pandemic, when you planned to be WFH, just because a partner wants you there to input his physical edits to a doc because he never learned how to use Word and his assistant and paralegal are on vacation?

Have him take photos of the edits and text/email them to you then return the revised draft! I’ve done this before and it worked.

My partner does this too when we aren’t in the office. Just snap pics and text or email them.

Sounds like you already went in, but it's probably a good opportunity to demonstrate some tech saavy and come up with ways that the partner could get you the edits without you having to risk life and limb. Like A1 said, at minimum have him send pics of the document or give him basic instructions on how to operate a scanner. Putting yourself at risk is never worth it, especially for Boomer issues this these. Flat out say you can't come in, and provide alternatives. If the partner can't be bothered to get up to speed on 90's era word processing, then at least you know not to work with them again.

You can buy a cheap, portable scanner at office supply stores for about $80. There is only one button to figure out. It’s not the best quality scan, but it’s not like you are turning the work product in to a client. It’s an internal working document. Maybe get the Partner one and find a way to get it to him/her without it seeming like you are suggesting there is a deficiency that needs addressed.

That’s beyond annoying. I’m sorry.

I wouldn’t go. Ever. Again. I don’t know what those of you in tiered firms are thinking.

I feel your frustration and I think what needs to occur is to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror and ask how you got into that position. Blaming your boss is easy. Taking responsibility for your inability to set boundaries and failure to manage this partner’s expectations for your time/availability is hard. But if you don’t respect yourself enough to set these boundaries in a professional manner no one else is. I do good work. I often do a lot more than I should, and certainly more than what other associates do. But I have boundaries that I worked to develop often with subtle and not so subtle digs from partners. It’s hard but it’s easier than driving through a snowstorm in a pandemic instead of spending time with your family because you couldn’t stand up for yourself. Good luck.

A5 is right. Ultimately, you teach people how to treat you. You alone do this. You should have said no. No is a complete response and it is also a complete sentence. You did not politely assert yourself. Why not? Ask yourself ... why not? Oftentimes, I see women who agree to do a task and/or will not turn down a task only to gripe and vent later that a guy never would have been asked or told to do the same. Why do you think that is? Is the guy more assertive than you? It seems as if there is a "people pleasing" aspect in play here. So are you a people pleaser? Do you care more about being liked, not making waves than being assertive and respected? You have to be politely assertive about what you will and will not do. It can feel uncomfortable to set boundaries. But as you do so, it will be liberating. As for the partner who cannot be bothered to stay in step with technology , that is not your problem to solve. Do not make any suggestions on how he can learn, etc as that ground was likely covered ad nauseam by his paralegal and legal assistant. If you choose to help him or her in the future, be clear about the terms, " I am happy to help but can only do so by phone or only at this time." Good luck. It is okay to say no. It's easier than you think.

This sounds exactly like my situation. Except my firm isn't WFH AT ALL 😑

Arrow Icon

Mine is “discretionary” but I haven’t gotten to take advantage of it yet 😬 I’m transactional and all of our partners are in-person - the litigators are much more flexible, so their associates haven’t been in the office since March.
