I just grabbed one of these too. Been on a big rye kick lately so looking forward to opening.
Yes, I live in Illinois and my local Binny's has it, need to call first since there is limited quantities.
What better way to enjoy NFL's Wildcard Weekend than with the whiskey of the year. Just cracked this baby open and here is my take from my non-sophisticated palate: in the nano second that you taste the heat from this ~65% ABV, the rich and buttery tastes of vanilla and butterscotch quickly start to dominate and the balance stays through and through. First tried neat and then added a small crystal clear ice cube and it made it even more balanced and rounded (not that it really needed balance and rounding, but it just made the tastes even smoother, richer,, and deeper).
My palate is not sophisticated enough to detect the ulmo and manuka honeys mentioned in Jim Murray's review, but there is definitely a noticeable, rich, yet not overpowering sweetness. I agree with his 'chewable' comments in his tasting notes.
I was a bit hesitant about how strong the alcohol content would influence the taste and I can happily say that it's not an issue at all. Definitely noticeable, but the other flavors mentioned above, and richness and depth quickly take over. Super well balanced and consistent.
Verdict: I will definitely be heading to my local Binny's soon to pick up a few more bottles! For today, I will enjoy a drink or two of this treasure. Cheers all.
This is such a fantastic pour. I was fortunate enough to grab a bottle of Batch #1 which was 65.1% ABV. I haven’t cracked it, but did a side by side with Batch #2 (what you have) and Batch #2 wins it. Once it started releasing in Texas, I made sure to grab several bottles!
Awesome, great to hear you liked it too. This whisky is quickly making all other whiskeys I used to like become second class citizens. The flavor depth and profile is honestly unparalleled, at least for anything I've had to date.
