On one hand, you have been given your marching orders. On the other, I think it's perfectly reasonable to say, "I have to have my grades done by the ____th, so I can only accept work until the ____th." But, my idea of reason and your school's idea of reason may be two different things.
Oh, my word! You must be extremely frustrated (to say the least). I understand the perspective that "it's about what they learn, not about when they turn it in"; however, I call BS on that. Life if FULL of deadlines. Meeting deadlines is a skill they must learn.
I regularly inform my students (and parents) of my late policy, and I stick to it. After the first or second time of the consequences, students tend to make sure to get the work turned in on time, even if it is incomplete.
Personally, I think it is VERY unfair of your school district to put you in such a position. If that student decides to turn in all of the missing work on the last day, you would be required to grade all of it AND still have your grades in on time. That is close to impossible. Think about the deadlines we have to adhere to, such as having our grades in on time. Those who don't meet the deadlines get in trouble with admin.
I do not think it is wrong of you to set a firm deadline and stick to it. Good luck.
Sounds like there is no mention of not being able to penalize late work. We are on a 10 pt scale and once an assignment is more than 1 week past due the max grade becomes a 75.
I would not look at 1700 papers turned in at the last minute. They can’t fail! I wouldn’t grade any homework! Just praise the students you can and encourage as much as possible!
We have the same policy. They are pretty much trying to overwhelm us so much that we will just give up and pass them. This way they can honestly say "The teacher passed them. We did not change their grades."
Yes it is wrong. It is also probably against the law to tell you what grade you can and cannot assign to a student.
And we wonder why we have a generation of kids who can’t keep a job or have no work ethic....
I agree with Utah Middle School 1. By the way, teachers never fail students, students fail themselves.
No accountability? Wow

Missouri: I admire your courage and tenacity in the face of a tide running in the opposite direction. I will admit, I have gone in a different direction, but only because I could not stand dealing with all the interruptions in regards to dodging school events, sickness, vacation, sloughing, and everything else in between. I am selfish for sure. It saves me time from figuring out school policies, etc. As it is, whatever the assignment, students have to work to complete it, and my experience is that students that don’t get it done when expected, even with no penalty, don’t usually come through at the end. For those willing to work, I am open to helping them. I would like to read or hear from others and their experiences and perspectives. Thoughts?

Arkansas: I wonder if you know how important, wise, and powerful your statement is! How many teachers use this powerful principle that flies in the face federal, state, and even district rules, guidelines, and expectations? It underscores the absolute fact that teachers are the last line in knowing how to handle their own classes! Not all teachers want this or are even prepared to take on that responsibility, but that should be the goal. Teachers are most effective when they can figure out what it that works in their classroom with local input. It is one way to turn our country in a more unified path.
So sad. Setting up the kids for failing in life. Is this a policy just for this COVID year? I hope it is. This year has been tough for teachers, students, and parents. I have to send home emails halfway through the quarter (for my 400 students) and two weeks before grades are due, telling parents all that their children are missing... some parents get back to me with heartbreaking stories. This year has been rough. But we don’t have a no zeros policy, so it is building resilience in our students. Some, that aren’t keeping up and don’t seem to be trying, are worrisome.
1700 missing assignments? Is that in all classes, or just yours?
I will never again work at a district that has a policy like that. That's one of my first questions for potential employers now. Learning responsibility is a key to adult success. It's bad enough that standardized testing has essentially peed in the drinking water of education, but this is too far.
