Very valuable presentation. The most important point he makes from a recruiter’s perspective is certainly that before the negotiation make sure they like you! I deal with many attorneys that seem to assume an employer should want them, and vice versa, I deal with clients that assume everyone should want to work for them. That mentality rarely works out for either side.

I am in a relationship- going on 7 years. It’s been messy and we’re struggling, not sure if it’s forever. Two years ago I fell in love with a good friend- never admitted it. He did and I cut him out to try and work on and respect my relationship. I still think about him, and feel awful and disgusted with myself. What is wrong with me. How do I move forward from this?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

What law firm is your favorite for run of the mill employment issues in the US and internationally (India, Australia, UK, Germany, etc.). I primarily use Littler because they have a broad reach and decent rates but I’m wondering whether Bird & Bird, Ogletree, or some other firm has similar pricing and as good or better quality work. So, who are you using and are you happy?

I’m looking at transactional in house roles for hedge funds and a PE style fund. Hedge funds would likely incorporate more general “keep the lights on” work as well. Does anyone have a view on which general path (HF v. PE) has a higher ceiling comp-wise? At this level they are comparable but not sure if in 10 years they will diverge.

I heard that when Netflix hires outside counsel, it asks a series of questions to determine how credit is given at the firm selected. The goal is to ensure that the “old white hairs” at the top are not receiving/taking credit from the lawyers really doing and managing the lion’s share of the work. Some level of research shows that the real working lawyers tend to be predominantly women/POC who are essentially punished by old school origination systems. Thoughts?

Another annoying question from someone who isn’t in-house (yet). Anyone have thoughts on how fast things typically (understanding that each company is different) move once interviews and writing samples are done? Had my screened and 3 sets of callbacks in pretty rapid succession last week, and submitted my writing samples on Tuesday to my HR contact, but I haven’t heard anything since.

I recently had an in-house interview for a large company where the screening interviewer communicated the salary range and told me that I had to let him know on the spot if the range was not high enough. The amount was lower than I initially expected based on my research into the role and company so I was a little surprised. What is the best response to this question bearing in mind that I would like to make it to the next round while negotiating a higher salary?

I’ve now received interest in my application to work for a larger non-profit in a more senior role. Need some guidance!

I have an in-house offer. $200k base, 25% target bonus and 25% equity grant. I am currently a rising third year in biglaw.

My recruiter claims that if I take the in-house position, she’d expect that in 3-4 years my base salary would increase to the mid to high 200s, with target bonus and equity each increasing to 40-50% of base.

Is this realistic or is she blowing smoke?

As background, this offer is at a young but rapidly growing PE firm in TX.
