Just realized a firm partner has a pattern of treating female employees poorly. Except for the associate who brings in the big money, of course. But it's a trend, and the only reason he doesn't take it as far with me as he does with others is because I do EVERYTHING and he is screwed if I just up and leave. If you've experienced this, how did you deal with it? And yes I am trying to leave, the job market here is a little tough right now.

I’m in the same situation. I do everything for my male partner, and while he treats me a little bit better than others when he needs me, it is apparent that he treats male associates better even though they do 1/3 of what I do. I realize the more I do, the worse his behavior gets. It was getting demoralizing and depressing to have him treat me this way. I finally broke down one day. There is only so much one can take. I left him to work for a female partner. It’s not guaranteed work and it’s new, so I don’t know if I will meet my billables but it is a chance I’m willing to take to keep my dignity. Best of luck. It is a horrible situation I’m still living through, so take comfort in knowing you are not alone.

That's awful, I'm sorry. I started a business so I am staying here while my business gains traction. It bums me out because I left another firm due to poor management and I ended up in this😑 working from home helps me maintain some sanity but nothing is really getting better.

Found a most enlightening work on decolonial history with tons of TIL moments especially about Anti Colonial movements in Egypt, China, Japan and course India in the 19th and 20th centuries. Most histories this period often adopt a Euro-centric lens but this book flips it and tells the stories of these turbulent times from the vantage point of the pioneering Asian leaders like Tagore, Al Afghani, Kang Youwei etc. Lovers of Asian history would surely appreciate this book

I'm doing everything in my power to not quit without another job lined up, and every interview falls through. I'm overwhelmed by my clients, I've had enough corporate koolaid for a lifetime, I could not care less about what I do, and I've started exhibiting destructive behaviors at work but keep getting told I'm doing great.

If I'm going to be stuck here, clearly my attitude is the main problem. How have you learned to find joy in your job? What makes you feel like you matter here? Why stay?

Anyone else obsess over your next career move? I’m a senior associate in a niche BigLaw group in DC. I am just now hitting my stride and can really see a path to partnership. I handle my own matters relatively independently, am generating some business, and will inherit a large book of business in my favorite space in the next year or so. The problem is that this isn’t what I want, or at least what I think I want. (Continued in comments).

Hoping for some advice on how to properly leverage another job offer to help make another company pull the trigger on you. I have a good feeling they will extend an offer but it’s not a slam dunk. I think I’m top 2. Company B has extended an offer but one that I’m not really considering (moving to a new city/not enough money). Do I mention this....

Discovered major pay difference between myself and two new male hires with equal experience. Asked for a raise and was shot down due to Covid and essentially told they make more (were talking a 30k) bc they don’t have my “other responsibilities” aKa my two kids. I know my productivity is effected by parental responsibility but I don’t feel that alone justifies the difference. I know our billable output isn’t drastically different. Not sure what my next steps should be and welcome any advice.

Recalling my first onboarding meeting in-house with the c - suite. Thinking back now recalling that they would often mention if someone they are referring to is a woman. For example, "Oh we have these two women doing x, y, and z and they do it well, a well-oiled machine." etc. I was the only woman in the room. They did not mention when someone performing a particular role was a man but they did point out when it's a woman, happened about four times. Odd, no? What would you make of this?

Had a talk with the partners Thursday, they said I’m not producing enough work at the end of each day. First year associate, new area of law, wfh so they are more “what are you doing every second”. Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.

Anyone here work in a firm where there are no female partners in your office? I feel like I have a lot of advancement opportunities from at least one partner but there is no clear route to partnership being shared at this point.
