Just received an offer from Big 4 audit in a major city. But I don’t have driver’s license…

Considering the impact of COVID on today’s leadership thinking, I’d recommend you focus on building relationships and your top-tier performance. When partners clearly see high RoI they will retain and promote you regardless if you drive or have working limbs. Spend less time thinking about driving and spend more time getting to that level of confidence where partners would find a way to retain you within the PwC network even if you have to move to another country.

Thanks!

I wouldn’t stress too much about it! When I started at B4, they asked us for DL during orientation. I freaked out bc I never got mine and brought it up to the HR people and they said it would depend on your clients ; I was lucky that all of mine were accessible by public transportation (for reference, I’m in audit in financial services). Worse comes to worse, you can always Uber, but as everyone above said, probably best to get it just in case.

Yes I am in Audit but not financial services. In a major city as well but not NYC. But anyway, I will take the advice here and get a DL ASAP!

Born and raised in NYC so DL is never a must for me. Former company is a small local CPA firm who doesn’t care. I took subway everyday or Uber if necessary. Shall I disclose the situation to HR? Offer already accepted and signed. Not sure if DL is still required or not but I am required to upload auto insurance coverage details, which I don’t have…

like

^Thanks! Already disclosed to HR and have contacted driving school last night for trainings.

You’re going to need a drivers license if you’re in audit.. Pre-Covid, I could count on one hand the number of times I went to the office. You’ll always be at random client sites that may or may not be in the city

like

Don’t pay out of pocket without getting a refund. They’ll charge it to the client. Mileage reimbursement likely wouldn’t be such different

I’m dying reading this.

If they did not ask you were under no obligation to disclose if you had a license. If it was that important they would asked or told you it was required. Big firms have lots of clients so they can figure it out. Some people have medical issues that prevent them from driving but it is not an excuse to not hire them.

like

Thanks a lot! I was not asked during the interview and screening. Hope it is not that much required

Wouldn’t work In Minneapolis. I once had an associate who didn’t drive and it was a nightmare. Every client meeting turned into an internal discussion of “who is going to drive Joyce there and back? “ It’s like we were responsible for drop off and pick up of a child. Get your drivers license.

likefunny

You will probably need to go to client site ( how soon depends on what city/state you will work, for example in SJ, CA they are not going to client site yet but will start prob later this year). i dont think it will be a problem now but better start the process soon cause in the near future you'll need to drive unless you want to spend money on Uber.

Have you heard of Olivia Rodrigo?

Not sure but she might steal OP’s job if they’re not careful - she got her driver’s license last week.

Uber

When I applied this job, DL is not one of the requirements. Now I feel like I messed up and missed a good opportunity😢

If you don’t have a drivers license, what form of ID do you carry on you when you leave your home?

Understood. Many of my friends didn’t have DL until 18 when they moved out of NYC for college. Coincidentally my current job does not require it at all.

Which city?

I’m in my late 40s and find it surprising that there are adults that don’t drive. Not judging but seems like it’s something you’d want to do when you come age.

There are plenty of places where adults not driving is the norm. My husband grew up in a large city and his dad was the only one with a license. His mother never had one. Him and his sister didn't drive until they were adults and living in areas without adequate public transportation.

Depends on the industry of your clients. My clients are in NYC so I don’t need to drive. Take an Uber or cab. At one point when we had to travel out of town, my team car pooled or took NJ transit and then Uber (it was quicker that way than being stuck in traffic). I have team members who work with me that do not have a DL, it works for them

As others have said, it all depends on the city and attitude of the teams/partners you’ll be working with. My city doesn’t have the public transit options, so a DL is a must here.

Why do you need a car? I don’t understand

When I was an intern at EY, I worked with some people from NYC. They were told they had to get a drivers license due to having to travel to and from the client. I am not sure if the rules have changed.
