On the real, I can’t imagine the absolute slap in the face to all the people who desperately need jobs and aren’t getting responses, now having to watch the red carpet rolled out for those laid off from WK. I don’t wish for anyone to be out of a job, but the double standard is just disgusting.

Maybe I would, but I’d also get it. Because I’ve worked at shops that recruiters adore, and at regular holding company shops, and there is a huge talent and expectations gap between the two. You work at a place like W+K for a lot less money and a lot longer hours and with a much higher bar and relocate to Portland precisely so you have this kind of safety net when things go south.
Is it nice? No. Is it entirely fair? No, I’m sure it makes other creatives feel awful. But this industry is not about fairness or niceness, the people with the best books survive. So your “everyone deserves a shot” mentality doesn’t really square with how things are.
I just think all this talk about “golden children” and “nepotism” misses the point. Yes, ex-WKers are an easier sell. Why? Not because their books are “cool” but because agencies have likely found that W+K trains them to work harder, get to bold ideas faster and craft the sh&$ out of them. (Also, because places like W+K attract people who love the biz and will do anything for it). Yes, there are diamonds in the rough who will miss out and duds from W+K, but you can’t just roll the dice on each hire. “Ex-W+K” is a badge that says they get it.
In times like these, I don’t begrudge agencies for having a high bar. It’s like complaining that every team wants to recruit from the Yankees.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people that used to work there having a slack or LI group.
It is annoying when other agencies or recruiters roll out the red carpet and publicly beg for them to apply.
You totally nailed it, OP. Saw a wave of LinkedIn posts today from recruiters who previously ghosted me or claimed they weren’t hiring—now suddenly saying, ‘If anyone at W+K was affected by layoffs, please reach out!
In all seriousness, apart from anything Nike-related, what was the last genuinely brilliant bit of work from W+K? Portland specifically as they had the recent layoffs.
I feel this and definitely not getting the WK treatment.
You’re not wrong but it is vital to show self respect. Especially when WK is losing its grip on the industry and is less revered than ever.
You ok?
WELL WELL WELL LOOK WHO IT IS
I’m having a lot problems with my iPhone 14. I’m no able to upload my resume. H
No one got into the ad industry wanting to be a recruiter. Most have never been to art/ad school or made an ad in their lives, or know what it takes to make good work. Many just scour the latest ad awards and look up who made what. How they’ve become the judges of talent is truly baffling.
As someone just laid off from WK, don’t worry, we’re just as fucked as all of you.
WKers just shit different. I mean hit different.
Lol wat
