I think you should gather all this data, keep time stamps, take screen shots... then release it all to be published. Love to see all involved needing to answer to their discrimination.
Horrifying. I don’t feel qualified to comment on how to combat this. Keep publishing about your experience until people start understanding this is unacceptable.
She’s given me permission to share this but it’s wild, she’s getting some journalists reaching out to her about her experience while simultaneously there are comments on her post saying discrimination is not a factor here. It’s like, are you blind? How ignorant can you be?
<sigh> unfortunately, news like this NEVER surprises me anymore (and likely doesn’t surprise those of us who are targeted regularly).
The freakonomics special talks about this. How important is your name to success. They had the same conclusion. Terrifying and sad.
I actually met a guy who’s a recruiter (and happens to be black) and he told me he’s more likely to respond to people with super white sounding names. He said he doesn’t waste his time with anyone who has an ethnic name because they probably will be difficult to communicate with or won’t respond. I’m still SHOOK.
I LOVE my name but, of all the names she had to chose from (we’re Jews, it’s a thing) Samantha could be shortened to Sam, and she has just read an article about how women with masculine names make more money over their lifetimes. That was 34 years ago...
I go by Sam because it short and I’m an impatient person. But I’m also very careful to make sure my org uses Sam as well. Mama didn’t raise no fool. Men think I’m male aaaalll the time until they meet me or a few emails have gone back and forth and I correct them. and yes I love the ensuing squirmy apology.
Also her fav show as a kid was Bewitched so it worked out that her recently deceased grandfather in law was named Samuel.
I’m speechless that you’re speechless. She has what is considered a “difficult” or “elaborate” first name and her last name (according to reports) is the blackest last name in America.
This is happening in 2018, it’s been happening since 1918. And it won’t stop unless we stop being surprised and start calling it out and challenging our peers to do better.

@CD2 I’m speechless (because it’s messed up), but unsurprised. Calling this out and amplifying her voice is exactly what I’m trying to do to bring to light the fact that this still happens on a daily basis. The more we acknowledge and highlight these instances, the better, so that decision makers in these scenarios and more can be self aware of their discrimination and not actively contribute towards it!
