Absolutely. Though it’s harder to say this to clients directly.

Agreed

You’re not going to get fired for billing a solid 170 or whatever of good work in a busy group that’s dying for associates. I’m not saying this is the path to partnership and being an all-star at your firm, but if you’re at the point of burning it all down anyway, how about try this as step 1?? Worst case scenario (this is not going to happen) you get fired from a job you hate and 20 other firms are waiting to snap you up?

A3, you can still say I’m at capacity and let the partner clean up their own mess. What are they going to do?

Also, set some dang boundaries. Every day I see “I hate sitting in the office until 8 pm; it’s ruining my marriage/social life/etc.”. So…. Don’t. I am NEVER in the office past 5-5:30 unless I am mid fire drill and can’t spend 15 minutes commuting. I don’t ask permission. I just go home and log back on. I am working and available as late as necessary, but I work from home with my husband and our dog. I also work remotely for long weekends to see my aging parents who live across the country. Again, I’m working and available, but I’m at least having breakfast with my mom. Spending time with my family is non-negotiable. Do a couple partners roll their eyes? Maybe. But I’m not getting fired over it. And I don’t want to be a partner, so I don’t care. So much of the biglaw misery is self-inflicted by people who just let themselves be treated like garbage.

100%. They put up our targets and everyone was stressing about the extra work, and one associate said to me “I don’t mind that, targets only matter if you plan to meet them”. She wasn’t bothered about making a bonus, just took the big fat pay check and went home at 6 every night. She bills just enough to avoid getting pushed out. She is wise.

I wouldn’t even start with “Sorry”. Nothing to apologize for.

Transferring from one HCOL city to another later this year. LinkedIn shows salaries for my level are 2% higher in the new city. Any advice on negotiating a raise with HR before my transfer? Trying not to be in the dark on my salary post-transfer until the last minute (I’m cynical and worried they might even try to pull off a slight reduction), and ideally I want at least a slight raise.
