Just started at a tier ii but received a MBB offer slated to begin in 2020. I lateraled from another tier II so it would be 3 consultancies in 6 months... any advice to handle?

You specified in a comment that you haven’t started at the new job. Please don’t. Be honest and let them know - they’ll understand and you won’t burn bridges. If you start, you’ll piss a lot of people off. It’s way too small a world to do that. You’ll see these people again throughout in your career. Take time off or stay at firm 1 until starting at MBB.

I guess I worded it poorly. I just moved to NYC for this new position so it felt like I had started... but from reading everyone’s comments, it’s better to back out now then begin and then back out.

Push MBB to let you start sooner if you need income or are worried about a resume gap. These things are often negotiable. Agree it’s better to not start or you could be open with the Tier 2 you’re about to start with and say you’ve gotten another offer with x that you feel like you can’t pass up. It’s not starting until January so you’d be happy to be a contractor with them until then if helpful.

Uh take it?

Oh just don't start then. Sign the MBB and take a 5 month break. If anyone asks just say you were traveling, spending time with family and working on personal projects.

If you can afford it, quit, travel the world, start MBB and stick with it. As long as you don't jump from MBB to Deloitte in 2 months you should be fine.

If you’re going to MBB. They won’t care, leave gracefully and apologize for the short notice. They’ll more than likely be happy to have an Alumni at MBB that could potentially be a boomerang or client down the road

like

you’re at the associate level, you are fine. Go MBB. If you were bouncing around as a partner it would look worse on your resume.

Don’t start at other T2 and enjoy life if you can afford it. If not, start at T2 and leave before probationary period ends

If it's Deloitte, join just for the experience at DU before you go to MBB.

Dude, do what you’re doing... stay in your new job till MBB role starts. Once you go MBB, you’ll never go back to Tier II. That bridge seems prime to be burnt...

BCG3 is right. Don’t be short-sighted.

I agree with the majority. Don’t start the new job. Do contract work if you need cash. I’d go live in Columbia, Mexico, Vietnam, or Indonesia for 3 months...

When you said “just”, how recent?

Sorry not just started - would begin in September. So I would spend 4 months there before lateraling again

I took 5 months off before starting and never realized how valuable that was. I thought that the 2-3 week vacations I would take would give me a similar experience. The vacations are lovely but limit where and how you travel. How many other opportunities will you get to do this while you're young? Maybe after leaving MBB for industry? Or leaving MBA for industry? These are all maybes, and are contingent on negotiating for the time off. If you can afford the time off, go for it.

Can I DM you about your experience? I would echo what everyone is saying here and take a few months off since at MBB you’re most likely going to be working hard, and your future is relatively set, so enjoy :)

I’m a year out of school. and I’m lateraling in at an experienced associate level. But agreed with M1, 3 years is an awkward amount of experience for a lateral. U don’t bring any unique industry knowledge nor enough consulting chops to be a post mba role. Can’t hurt to apply though

Just curious, but have you been actively interviewing for all these firms or how have you received all these opportunities in such a short time span?

tier II reached out to me on LinkedIn and I applied for MBB on my own through a referral (which I got through LinkedIn) Just not very satisfied at my previous firm so was pretty actively looking

Will add also, MBB was very weird in experienced hiring. I was basically told I did well in my final but hiring needs was fluctuating so to hang tight. Then I heard back 3 weeks later hence this situation

Seems normal, no? They like you as a candidate but don't want to pay you to sit on the bench. My smaller firm moved around start dates for campus hires a bit to sync with client demand.

In a world of remote consulting work…. How long can the US maintain its high premium over European and, esp. developing market consulting? Both price tag to clients and significantly higher salaries for the people. Thoughts?
