Two suits, 5-7 buttons down shirts, 2-3 polo shirts... start with that... make it easier for yourself and go with neutral colors... stay more concerned about fit over everything else, budget a bit for a tailor for this... good luck, look sharp... and as your grow as a person, adjust your wardrobe and start expressing your personality a bit.... you’ll figure it out, but this is a good starting point - have fun!
Seconded to everything EY1 said. Would add, buy two pairs of good, leather shoes (one pair in black, and another pair in brown, tan, or burgundy depending on your preference). If you can afford starting off with Allen Edmonds, definitely start there (or better) and skip all the cheap nonsense that falls apart after a year. If you invest and take care of them, the uppers of the shoes can easily last your entire career. Good shoes will definitely elevate your typical button-up with jeans and/or chinos.
Buy stuff on sale and start with key pieces you can rewear during the week like a couple jeans/slacks. Start with 5 button downs (mix in polos if it’s hot where you live). Buy on sale at Nordstrom rack, off 5th, last call, tj max, Marshall’s etc. lots of fall sales should be happening too. I know it’s expensive as hell to buy so many pieces at once.
Pick up a neutral type of Blazer. Just leave it at the office. That way you don’t feel like you need to buy a bunch at once.
Buy straight leg or slim cut jeans. No skinny jeans. Don’t buy anything with a faded type wash or weird designs on the pockets.
It’s not high school man. Buy what you’re comfortable in. Nobody will judge you. just be clean, neat, professional. Don’t worry about brands. Focus on your performance and learning/doing as much as you can. Kill it!
@CA 1 The underwear comment made me lol
If you read Dappered's $1500 wardrobe it is a really good starting point.
Charles tyrwhitt shirts, Paige jeans, Allen Edmonds shoes and a good pair of loafers (I like Church)
A good fitted blazer (Ted baker, Gant, etc) and all set.
Also get the jeans fitted
