Just took a mandatory pay cut due to COVID-19. Thinking about freelancing to cover some of that loss, but don’t want to create any conflicts with my current gig- any advice/tips?

check your agency contract terms (some state no freelance allowed). if it does, negotiate given the circumstances. when you do pursue freelance, be up front with your clients on your availability/timing given the 9-5 before you commit to anything. it can be tough to balance two schedules. wishing you the best of luck! 🙌🏼

Make sure you don’t use the same computer, anything done on your work machine is property of your agency. Also know others who teach English on VIP kid and like it. You teach English to little kids in China, where there is also a ton of demand now with the kids staying home.

I just want to hear the explanation for why staff who started during COVID are doing so badly on average (and I have heard this from every level including staff themselves) from the pro 100 percent work from home people. If you agree it’s real, what is your solution? If it can’t be fixed, are we just accepting that the people we expect to backfill our positions aren’t going to be ready?

MAGA friends, why does every conversation with you about COVID and the US Covid response include a claim that it’s China’s fault? Let’s say I grant your premise. How does COVID being China’s fault make the Trump response seemingly better? There are a number of things the president has to respond to that he did not directly cause - are you suggesting we don’t want someone capable of responding to events they did not have a hand in crafting?

Want to buy property in / near NYC. I know with covid prices in the city (I’m assuming the 5 boroughs) went down, while prices outside of the city went up. Is that enough of a move in the market to make it worth it to buy in the city (and not in Long Island for example)?

Quick vent: fiancé and I were going to put an offer in on an apartment we loved before all of this Covid stuff happened but changed that plan to rent to buy starting Aug to be safer. The sellers just told us they accepted someone else’s offer to buy. We, especially me, were in love with the apartment but we were too risk adverse to buy now bc if Covid and fiancé working at a startup that had layoffs in the beginning. Just sad bc we’ve been looking for two years and this was the perfect place.

Just read the sad news of the death of 1st AD John Nolan. (See wheresspot for thread) While I hope be didn't contract Covid on either of the 2 sets mentioned prior to his illness and death, if it comes back that he did, we need to have a long hard chat about what went wrong. Condolences to his family. Truly horrible news.

Anyone mind sharing their average monthly electricity (kWh) usage since covid? I’m in southern CA, 2k sq ft house w/pool, 2 adults working from home (no kids). Summer months are around 1,700 kWh; other 9-10 months average around 400 kWh. We replaced HVAC post-summer and hope to see improvement this summer. Thanks in advance.

We want to go to Thailand with our 1 year old in Nov; however, we have been told we are crazy multiple times. We would hire nannies once there, but obviously it’s a bit scary with COVID (though when we mentioned the trip to our pediatrician, he seemed more concerned about the 20+ hour travel time. We are flying business, if that helps). Could anyone provide perspective on how you might consider whether to cancel? Should we do something else (e.g. Europe, Mexico, etc.). The trip is 2+ weeks long

Unpopular opinions: the hybrid model is the worst of both worlds for people in hcol cities with no kids. You have to be close to the office where the commute doesn't suck but you also need a place big enough to have an office. Any covid rent discount is way more than offset by this
