Fishbowl take: Anyone can rise through the ranks, few can get into MBB.
Real world take: Rising the ranks is probably harder and more impressive to most people than getting the right names on your resume.
Also i turned down the same for industry director 🤷♂️ Who knows if it was the right call.
Um no
Chief
Yeah that was dumb
Glad you chose to be ethical ;) relatively speaking!
In all seriousness though, in the long term, you will be fine wherever you end up - human beings have a miraculous way of making any place home - EYP will be yours. In any case, no benefit revisiting that decision since it’s already in the past. Good luck OP! Rooting for you - all the happiness and blessings to you!!
No. EM is just a manager role. Senior Director is SM. You made the right decision

What was the make or break for you?

Rising Star
Only thing I think is dumb would be taking a higher level for similar money
Yes - kind of stupid!
For what it’s worth my SO and I did a similar thing and within one year I had already made more. Also $200k base salary for EM is pretty low…within a year two years new base would be $300k+ with average work performance and that’s assuming you aren’t promoted to AP
M4 is way closer to the truth than M3…
Base Will not go to the 300k lol. Don’t know a single AP with 300 base today
No
Nah
6 YOE so it really put me ahead of the game…base is just very high, so it was more of a matter or risk adversity. 265 base vs 205 base. Obviously, bonus will probably be 20% vs 60% or so, but just don’t want to take the risk with less senior title. Brand is very good for both, so didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but might regret this

At face value? Probably. But maybe there’s a decent reason behind it
(DCF, LBO, Merger Model)
I bet your WLB will be much better at EYP.
Definitely a factor
Speaking as an "old F***" at EYP, welcome. McB's, Big 4, others...you will be financially fine. Work with the folks you want to work with on the projects you want to do with the clients you like. Also, don't do "evil".
EYP can offer you an incredible platform. So can McK. But, you should go where you are comfortable. Both offer excellent off-ramps if consulting is not your life vocation. Both offer excellent tracks to Partner if that is your path. Both pay an embarrassing amount of money. And, if you stick it out for 25 or so, both will leave you thinking about legacy wealth transfer. So, go hang out in the place you feel most comfortable in.
Obviously, I am team EYP. But please note I was McB in the past. I think these days it is more important to understand what part / practice / sub-element of a firm you are joining. Those are the folks you will interact with the most.
No bad choices here but let me welcome you to the firm!
Mcbain?
Yes
YOE? Curious.
Isn’t senior director at EYP = SM at other places?
Yep correct
Prob a fine move if you just want to find a job that gets you more cash asap, but a bad move if you have many diff paths you might want to pursue throughout your career (startup, industry jobs, some other random sector) or have aspirations to get to a really top position.
Unfortunately, people make snap judgments on whether you’re worth their time. McK vs EYP has a big brand/impression gap.
With McK on your resume, people will default assume you are pretty competent / elite.
With EYP, ppl will likely default assume you couldn’t get into better firms and think you’re decent but not outstanding.

Yes and no about MBB. People always find ways to think what they want. For example, specialists at MBB might not get that distinction. Or other non-generalist or integrative tracks. Or lateral hires vs. homegrown. Or short tenures with no promotion.
People who haven’t worked at MBB act like getting in is the end all be all, while people who’ve worked there will mostly tell you that’s just the beginning. Resume building is a dark road to go down, and often the people who collect brands don’t even do as well as the people who just find one good company and grow there.
