Just venting. I’m tech, and many employees (like 85%) think that being a jerk is a badge of honor and their EQ is like at high school level, so talking to them about diversity issues is like banging head against the wall. They insist that any diversity hire is costing a job to another person with PhD. On top of it, another fancy thing to do in tech is to hate HR. So the conversations usually are like “Oh, you’re in HR, I understand now why you have such a stupid opinion”.

Have you ever worked outside of tech? HR is hated in every industry.

I love my job. And when I make people respect me for the job I do, it’s even sweeter knowing how much bias against HR they had to overcome to admit my great work. I’m just trying to remember that people often mix up nice and good, and it’s not the same thing, and I have a portrait of RBG, HR job is somehow close to a judge so I’m just looking in her wise 👀 to cheer up.

I’d welcome an opportunity to speak with your organization. We specialize in shutting that shit down. With individuals who aren’t anti-racist, sometimes you have to meet them where they are and an organization has to decide that those people don’t reflect the new found views of said organization and kindly remove those elements. Otherwise you have a toxic company with folks constantly undermining your efforts.

Put yourself in their shoes, understand their drivers and then put together an analysis and use that to help them understand why and how diverse employees are most important. For me the #1 would be how it would look if news got out how our management views diversity. #2 how different ideas bring significant value. #3 recruitment with diversity on both sides of the table are key, from that you pick the best candidate. Understanding bias, etc. Keep going with this and meet with your manager to get their buy in and continue with C level. If this doesn’t work and this isn’t the type of company you want to work then leave. Let them know why you’re leaving. They will learn the hard or easy way but you’ll know you tried.

I’m not in tech now but have been. I find when I try to see things as other people do I have more success in communicating the message. Maybe it won’t work. Are you change certified? It too can help, I recommend PROSCI. Or, don’t be a hero in a situation where you can’t impact change. Find another role.

Yikes. I'm sorry; that sounds like an awful environment to be in and they should like entitled pricks. It might be a good time to brush up ye olde resume. I'm also in tech and find talking about DEI with leadership feels like banging my head against a wall vs employees. (Though they all like to think of themselves as very socially aware. 😒)

Less of a question, more of a request... stop asking your junior BIPOC strats to work on BLM briefs because they are the only voice of color on your team. In a time where we need support grappling with our very REAL realities and how it impacts how we show up in the agency, the LAST thing we need is an “opportunity” to express our “unique POV” on a diversity brief (that we won’t even get to speak to none the less). Imagine having to chanbel your trauma into a deck to sell in an idea to clients?

If you feel the need to name a woman's gender in your complaint about her, ask yourself how many times you've explicitly complained about bad "male managers." If you haven't, maybe think about why?

While my boss is very sensitive to sexism, he often reminds me that I am only a 2nd year, and that sometimes people (attorneys in our firm, outside co-counsel, opposing counsel) treat me differently in accordance with my experience level, rather than because of my gender. I, however, believe that I’d be given a lot more respect as a male 2nd year. Small firm so we don’t have any male associates. How do I show him it’s my gender and not my experience level?

Anyone here work for FedEx? In the last six months or so, I’ve applied for three separate attorney positions in their Pittsburgh office. I meet the qualifications and the experience requirements. I know this isn’t an exact science, but according to LinkedIn, I was in the top 10% of applicants for all three positions. I can’t even get an interview. The positions seem really interesting and I love the company’s commitment to diversity. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong!
