Good to hear and thanks for posting! What’s the best way to assess this as a candidate? A lot of firms are talking about D&I but hard to know if it’s just talk
This is extremely important to hear. This is something K&E is making a big effort with. Please reach out if you’re considering K&E
How specifically are you guys making efforts? Do you make this known in the interview?
I love this post, very uplifting. What are you doing to make sure your diverse talent feels comfortable there? Often diverse hires end up feeling misunderstood and marginalized after the big PR splash. Curious to hear your POV. Please keep going!
To answer the people above asking how they would know: ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS! The firms who are really on their D&I game can tell you what they’re doing. We have regular unconscious bias training and cultural awareness training to sensitize people so you don’t feel like a fish out of water when you work with us. We take comments given to mentors and others seriously. We bring in excellent speakers on tough topics like race in the legal workplace. We have international clients so it’s not really excusable to pretend you don’t understand someone from a different background. And like with any person of any diversity, it has to be the right fit and we assess that holistically.
It’s almost 2019, if a firm can’t answer you on this then you shouldn’t want to work there, period. And they’ll suffer from the lack of talent: study after study shows diversity increases a team’s bottom line.
Completely agree you should not judge on numbers alone. However, not all firms with low numbers of POC are making sincere efforts (as opposed to going through the motions). You’ll need to do your homework but firms who are serious about D&I work are actively engaged in improving their numbers and improving the experiences and opportunities for POC at the firm.
Nobody is pretending it’ll be easy to be the first or second Black lawyer at a firm with a lot of white lawyers (thinking of one of our smaller offices), but we’re really trying to ensure you are welcome and you are supported.
