Man I dont know what city youre in, or your age, but its great you feel that way. On the more experienced end of things it feels very much the opposite. Agencies dont need talent so much as they just need people to fill client requests, on the day theyre being requested. Clients need social posts, they need banners, they need stuff to change, kill, and “react to.” Agencies need bodies, they need wrists, they need hours, and they need to not pay much for them. Anyone asking for too much, or being too much trouble, or asking for too many raises or promotions, or time off, there are PLENTY of other people in line behind them (because theyve been laid off somewhere else).
But Im talking about people over 40, who want a CD title or above, and 150k salary or above. I guess senior level or below is just a whole different ball game. (Although it would be interesting to hear what you mean by “more than we need them.” You need income dont you?)
Here’s the thing: there aren’t that many people in line behind them right now. There’s a talent drought out there. If you’re good, you will always have a job and you will always be in demand. Hence why agencies need us more than we need them.
I’m a very experienced senior writer and CD, currently freelance. Every shop I help is filled with creatives being worked to the bone and for the most part, the creatives accept that instead of challenging it. The pitches are demanding and the client requests are non stop. Agency owners get richer for our hard work. The industry is in overdrive mode and it’s not sustainable.
