Just witnessed a mess on flight with flight attendants escalating a 2.5 year old not wearing a mask. We need to drop mask mandates for kids. It’s completely impractical and causing chaos for travelers and flight attendants. Europe is age 5 and that seems way more reasonable.

One of my kids tested positive today. He has had a cough that did not shake so we went to get him checked, doc did not expect covid but said yeah you should check and he indeed has it. A little over 2. We have not been in a true public place in at least a month with them as we usually go see family or are dead tired on weekend and do stuff at home, so likely got it from daycare. Everyone else they are around we know is vaccinated. While I agree it is hard to get kids to do masks, they can have it and can spread it so I kind of understand the precaution. This delta variant I am concerned is going to throw everything back into chaos which is good for absolutely nobody whether economically, mental health wise, and of course health for those who get the worst of it.

Off to start cancelling meetings after my spouse and I figure out the rotation of work vs. kids the next few days. This virus just needs to be over.

I’m so sorry to hear that EY5, and appreciate you sharing. I am really concerned about Delta and whatever is next too. Some may say that’s just being afraid, but that’s being aware. Hope your child is better soon and your family stays healthy.

My mom is a preschool teacher and she and one assistant were able to keep masks on eight 3 year olds 8 hours a day. Sure some get annoyed and take them off but they just put them right back on and enforced the rule. I worked at a daycare years ago and respectfully 9 out of 10 times when a parent said “well my baby can’t do that or won’t do that” it wasn’t that the kid was incapable, it was the parents holding them back. First time we had kids sit around a circle for story time some got up and we just sat them back down. Some cried but they eventually get used to it. And then there are of course those parents who complained that there child should be free to move around. There are rules in society and your kids are very capable of following those rules if you model them and reinforce them. Its not always fun but it’s your responsibility as a parent.

like

C1 - yes, as I’ve said elsewhere I’ve been practicing for months. I still can’t guarantee my child will comply in the moment. Just like a parent can’t guarantee a child won’t throw a tantrum at a doctor’s office. Just like a child that is potty trained for years can have an accident.

Not arguing that kids shouldn’t wear masks or that I don’t think my “precious angel” should have to wear a mask. I just think people should give some grace. All the preparation and “perfect” parenting can’t give you 100% certainty that an irrational 2.5 year old will do what is expected in the moment. It doesn’t make those people bad parents.

My 2.5 yo wore a mask on his flights no problem, because that is our expectation and his daycare’s expectation.

likehelpful

D2 - it doesn’t. But if you decide to fly with your kids, it’s reasonable to expect that you have read and understood the rules…and that you will do your absolute best to follow them and ensure that your kids do the same. You’re only a garbage person or a bad parent if you decide on your own that your kids don’t have to follow the rules and you make a big stink about it.

I’m just going to make the probably accurate assumption that you’re a White American woman that coddles her children to a ridiculous degree (children who will probably be fundamentally broken by 12-15 years old anyway). This is why I love immigrant parents. 3 year old son/daughter doesn’t want to comply with the mask mandate? Yeah, we’ll see about that. 🤣🤣🤣

likefunny

As an immigrant parent I got to ask how do other immigrant parents force their kids to wear a mask if they don’t want it. Granted my child is almost 2 so I still have a year until he’s 3. But at 2 there is absolutely now way he’d keep the mask on

like

Why is it so hard for you all to comply with the rules? If you can’t do that, drive.

Eh. Parents shouldn’t fly if they think their kid is going to cause trouble. It’s a rule.

Hell, my parents would’ve tied the thing to my face if I didn’t listen.

This. I’m a very liberal person but this level of coddling is fcking absurd. Then again, I HIGHLY doubt the Karens shrieking about this (like the OP) are of immigrant (partic Asian / South Asian / Middle Eastern) background.

The comments in this post make it clear how many of you don’t have children or have never spent significant time with a 2.5 year old. The mask rules for young kids are unreasonable and the flight attendants should show a little discretion in this situation and let it go.

P2, Yes, if you KNOW your kid won't wear a mask, then don't fly.

This dismissed the entire point that kid are unpredictable. When my kid was 2, she went on a few flights with no problems. On probably her fourth flight, something triggered her and I just could not get her to calm down. Her mom and I tried taking turns to soothe her, but she just wouldn't be calmed. She probably cried 75% of the long flight. We tried snacks, games, her stuffed animals, tablet, etc.

If this were during COVID, should they have landed the plane?

If parents wear masks, kids will too. If they can’t, limit their activities instead of insisting everyone else stays home to stay safe and stop the spread.

My daughter is 2 and no matter how many times we practice / wear masks with her/ etc. she won’t wear it for more than 30 min. We have a wedding to attend in September and for this reason we are driving 15 hours as I know the flight will be a problem.

See, this is responsible parenting, kudos!

Lemmi guess, it was a white family whose kid wouldn't wear a mask. Tons of kids weR masks properly without issue. Maybe get pissed at the parenting. Your privilege shows

Wonder if Disney dad is done complaining about masks on planes…Florida set a record at 21,000 new cases today. When taking your family on vacation to the “epicenter of the virus”, don’t worry about the flight. You have bigger issues. Meanwhile, their gov has made sure schools are barred from requiring masks. Doubling down on stupid. Over and over.

like

Love how everyone is up in arms against OP sympathizing with a child who won’t keep their mask up, when the same airlines are selling every seat, serving drinks and snacks inflight, and the entire airplane is removing their mask at basically the same time to eat. So your risk tolerance allows for the entire plane to eat pretzels, but you draw the line at a 2.5yr old who won’t wear their mask properly?
Also I’ve been on plenty of flights where the adults wore their masks incorrectly (below their nose) and the FA didn’t go around policing every one of them.

like

This is addressed several times in several posts. I won't restate it here.

Feels pretty simple, follow the rules or don't fly. I would rather my 2.5 year old not have to wear a mask on a flight, so we don't fly with her.

No need to impose your opinion and desire at the same time. Very few people "have" to fly with their 2.5 year olds, they choose to.

9/13 is when mask rules expire. With any hope they won’t be extended.

I’m starting to read up on Lambda. Covids epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, and kappa have not been of particular concern. Basically everyone who contracts the disease offers their own unique petri dish for new variant mutations. Grand, just grand.

Do your part to stop the spread especially with the Delta variants. Countries will soon stop Americans from traveling again. Soon there will be mandatory mask mandates. We will never get rid of COVID-19 if each and every American does not do their part to stop the spread.

Honestly - try rationaliZing with a 2.5 year old - and keeping them calm, and holding them down to keep the mask on. The folks that are commenting on this clearly have never interacted with a toddler. And if you continue to say get the mask on them - I hope to god that you are seated next to the parent that is fighting their child to keep the mask on, as they scream and cry for the entirety of the flight and the You proceed to complain that you sat next to a screaming child.
