Just wondering if this local or a problem all litigators are facing. COVID impacted trial scheduling . Courts then set trials randomly. Meanwhile more complaints were filed and more trial dates were set. Now, my court is simply refusing to grant stips to continue trial and ex partes. Our trial calendar is apocalyptic at this point. I understand the courts are backlogged and need to keep cases moving. But, matters are being neglected and I feel like the court is setting us up for malpractice.

Yep, same issues in NJ.

Just had an appearance that was supposed to be just a conference and the court tried to tell me that I need to be ready for trial in six days, after no appearances on this case in a year and a half. I had to beg for a 2022 date. It’s arbitrary AF. NYC litigator

Courts are definitely impacted but I feel the opposite, our cases have all been pushed by stip and courts don’t care. They don’t want it on their calendar. I’m in Southern California.

like

Yep! We’re a small firm so we have cases all over CA. We have never had a problem moving any court date both civil and crim 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good luck getting a dispositive motion hearing in Wayne County, Michigan.

Despite every Courtroom having Zoom, it seems as if judges are still mostly WFH.

I practice in 3 states (KY, OH, and IN) and every single calendar is Apocalypse Now. Most judges are taking us to the eve of trial and then telling us "haha jk I've had a guy in custody since 2019 and he's not going to plead after all! You're continued." On the bright side, it's giving us some extra ammo to get cases mediated. That is, when we can get in with a mediator, as virtually all of them are booked solid six months out...for similar reasons.

Hey Everyone!
I’m coming up on one year of working in consulting post under grad in a financial services vertical. I know I want to transition to corporate strategy down the road, but don’t have much interest in financial service strategy. Should I try and switch into a more applicable practice such as M&A or operations? Will I be able to break into corporate strategy without any past experience in that industry? I want to avoid getting pigeonholed into FS, but with COVID, don’t want to leave.

It took me 10 yrs to come out gay in the workplace. I was single during this time and then met a guy right before Covid.

Personally it was amazing because like me, he identifies as asexual gay. We have been together 3 years and it has been magical.

I started coming out as asexual and surprisingly it hasn’t gone well. People either accuse me of lying or “something amiss in the relationship”. Should I just stop caring? I like to educate people on asexuality as it hurt me my whole life but …

Partners, please looking for some advice. I work for a boutique firm and worked really hard the past year with a lot more responsibilities and an under staffed team (hiring freeze because of covid). However, my direct reports did not get any bonus. It has really tainted my view on the firm because...cont.

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

The amount of people, even attorneys, who can't separate out the policy merits of abortion from the issue of whether it is a constitutional right is disappointing. I consider myself pro-choice ---I believe states should allow it, that the federal government can pass a statute to guarantee it, and that FDA statutes and regulations will preempt any state trying to ban chemical abortions through FDA approved drugs. Dobbs at its core is a case about the Due Process Clause, not the policy of abortion
