This is why PMs need to live within the Production department.
Agree... always include Content Production & Business Affairs into scope when you know there will be a Production. Seems mad not to (?!)
9 Times out of 10 the scoping and staffing plan are egregiously out of whack to what is actually necessary for production. Production should be involved in not only the budget discussion per project but also the overall budgeting for the year on the OOP and the Retainer/staffing. The biggest issue when it comes to staffing plans is that they are created by people who have no idea what it takes to come up with and execute an idea.
@FREELANCE correct. Hence why I’ve fought to have PMs within my production teams at a few agencies

Maybe OP is working with a bad PM. Lots of those.
I can certainly sympathize... and do value my PMs. However, when you're at risk for talent penalties or hundreds of thousands of dollars in renewal fees that weren't even accounted for, who fucked up on team transparency over client planning??
Businesses affairs usually gets brought in but typically production falls completely into Out of pocket. Most of the time producers hours will get lumped into that. If I know it will be heavy production work producer hours would get scoped in the annual or retainer budget. Talent I would never include in a clients budget. No idea on usage etc.
Because they don’t care about the work as much as they care about agreeing to their client’s budgets so they can keep their jobs. They are stressed because their clients are mean and have them by their throats, and when they talk to us we ask questions they think are complicated. As a freelancer who works agency side and vendor side they adopt the same strategy agency producers do with vendors. They say” I know I’m sorry. this is my budget. Please make it work, if you can’t, I’ll find someone else who will.”
Yes thank you
@Freelance I disagree. An account producer responsible for the Retainer should definitely know how to scope for an ideal/execution of an idea. If you feel like they don't get, perhaps educate them?
