Personally, I’m not in favor of it. I appreciate working in an industry where you are paid based on your performance and you have upward mobility based on merit rather than just seniority.
If we had unsafe working conditions and were grossly underpaid, this might be a different conversation. However, most of us are in the top 5-10% of income earners in our respective countries and, while travel isn’t always fun, definitely doesn’t constitute an unsafe work environment.
Why do we need it?
@D1: Don’t hire slackers.
So glad I live in a right to work state.
We organise as employees when needed and voice our concerns. Several times, we've received concessions, other time considerations, other times denials. The bargain we have of compensation to wlb is very much in our favor compared to Union shops. I see no reason to give away part of my paycheck in the form of union dues to receive the same benefits I get without one.
The inflexibility a union brings to technology development will destroy any company that tries it. Imagine trying to be Agile in a union shop.
A tech union in the US might be helpful when it comes to giving workers a voice in what their company builds.
I make exactly 300% more since I left the union. My benefits are the same. I did have 9 extra days off with the union, but they were unpaid. Literally the worst negotiators I’ve ever seen. It protects the worst employees while taking away incentives for young high performers. It’s more about seniority than hot skills. I prefer the free market and I’m an excellent negotiator.
The current health insurance system doesn’t make sense to anyone that understands how it works. It’s full of expensive problems. Each presidential candidate always promises to fix it, but none of them do anything once they see the price tag. Bottom line is it’s very expensive and extremely inefficient. A booming business is traveling to luxurious resorts and having surgery while being on vacation. It’s still cheaper than surgery here with all the travel. It’s mostly plastic surgery at this point. It could get to the point where surgery is outsourced.
Inb4 the anti union crowd
Will withhold judgement for a few years and see how Kickstarter does. Would sick to lose them over greedy employees.
