I did the biglaw thing and I’m the first to say it’s as miserable as it sounds BUT I don’t regret having started my career there. I paid off my loans in maybe 3 years and the experience did wonders for my resume.

like

Maybe I’m an outlier here, but I actually liked working in big law. Pay was great, people could be annoying, but brilliant—and I learned a ton. When I cofounded a fund, I never could have done it without being in big law first.

Hahaha a good sense of humor is important. My old Partner was like that at my last firm and he was a blast to work with

No lies told here. The people who turn their nose up at big law are usually folks who didnt have what it took in law school to get high grades to land a big law job.

The truth is most people are in big law for only 3-4 years. If you spent 3 years on law school going 180k in debt, I’m sure spending only 3 years getting out of debt before you do your public interest WLB stuff makes sense.

Ok, Scott.

Settle. I never applied to any law firm, not even as a summer associate. I always knew I wanted to work in-house. Paid off loans within a few years (3?), have never worked nights or weekends, and do exciting work. Some people just want different things. Accept it and live your own life.

like

This is such great advice. Thank you!!

To be clear, I got a big law job; worked 6 months; and then left for another firm when I figured out that I truly did value work life balance. Yes, I do get paid less but also don’t work weekends or late nights.

Yea same situation here as AA1. I went for a big firm but not market Big Law to have control over my schedule. I come and go as I please and I never work nights or weekends unless like I went off to Disneyland during the weekday so decided to make up time. I make less than market but I still make close to 300

I’ve worked in small law and big law. Only ID works long hours ime. Both my small firms had 1600 hour requirements, and that’s what I did. Both my big law firms had 2050 hour requirement and I billed 2300. You do the math.

like

See, A11 gets it.

What’s even worse is when our friends in ID describe their plight and then all the BigLaw associates tell them that they’re underpaid and should move to BigLaw given the hours that they’re already working.

like

To be clear I didn’t land big law & had to go into consulting to pay these loans — I just hate hearing people say this

Business tax credits! There are some firms that pay attorneys very well. I’m trying to get some exposure to M&A consulting too because it’s supposed to be the most lucrative right now

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but what kind of health benefits do your firms offer? I’m at a small firm (<10 attorneys) and the firm covers all health insurance premiums for staff and associates (including spouse and family plans) and also covers half of our deductibles. We also get a fitness reimbursement up to $200 per month. Are those benefits standard across the industry?

Approaching the end of my 1st of practice. My weakness thus far is overthinking everything to the extreme! Even with simple issues — I end up going down the rabbit hole. I spend way too much time on everything I do. (from emails, to motions, etc.) I think it’s my anxiety and/or perfectionism that I will somehow screw something up and make some error that cannot be rectified. Im not sure. But everything to me feels like life or death. (sad, but true). PLEASE how do I stop this? Please help!
