Asians in Consulting

LA or SF? SO and I are both looking to move to California. I know cost of living is lower in LA, but the chance of us both landing a consulting job in SF seems higher?

Depends on the type of consulting. And the weather is so much better in LA :).

Operations (supply chain) and financial services consulting. And you’re right weather is important too

Yes, it's easier to land a consulting job in SF than LA. Most firms have larger SF offices and smaller (or no) LA office.

I would apply to jobs in both and see what your options are. I’ve lived in both and loved both, I love hiking and trail running and both can be great. I think most people can find a place they’ll like in both cities so maybe job as deciding factor is a better approach

Sf is better for job opportunities and better hiking/camping, wineries etc. La cheaper rent and cost of living, way better beaches but really spread out. Sf less diverse than la in terms of people - more of a bubble. Weather for sf is not great but u can live in south bay which is actually quite warm and nice (huge diff in temperature between sf and san jose). I live in the sf bay area (south bay) and i worked in LA for about 8 months and above is my observation.

If you don’t make 200k, you can’t live in these places

In LA you could buy something fine (obviously not in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills etc) but overall you are way better off than most people in both cities

I prefer SF weather as I start to hate everything when it gets above 77F but really Seattle is more endgoal for me.

Another vote for sf. Agree with most things stated. As a Korean American I do miss SoCal Korean food. Sf Korean food is much better than your average us city but la is better. But LA traffic is so unbearable. And the commute notwithstanding, weekend day trips in NorCal are mostly pretty nice. I live in sf proper so hopping up to Napa for brunch or Monterey bay south or mount diablo for hiking is pretty doable. Net net it’s close but if you want a career in tech I think NorCal wins. If you’re more open la can feel more compelling. Both for Asian Americans are a strong pick obviously.

I’ve lived in both SF and LA, AMA! What factors are important to you and your SO in the location you live? Factors i can speak to for example: Personal life: food, weather, social culture, attire etc Work: local projects/industry, salary/COL, commute times, work culture etc

Thank you all! It’s definitely not an easy choice to make, and thanks for sharing all the details!
