Fat lady here, so there was no wearing the right clothes or flirting my way up. (Thank god.) Since I was essentially invisible, I had to make my work impossible to ignore. It's a lot harder than playing the game, but so much more rewarding. And might I add, I've kicked ass.

I hate that you feel like you have to flirt and play a game to get the career you want. I'm a straight shooter. I wear my opinions on my sleeve and am transparent with internal teams and clients. They either think I'm smart or don't but so far it seems to be working for me.

like

I think what's worked for me is knowing that since I'm a woman, I have to play a certain game. There's no point in me fighting it. I have to wear certain clothes, I have to deal with men in a certain way and make them feel comfortable. I have to be assertive sometimes, flirty at others. If you want to create the career that you want, you have to design this shit and play the game.

I second Havas1. Confidence, wit, laughter and fearlessness have gotten me places.

My experience is similar. Talk straight. Be authentic. Be willing to fight for what you and your team need for success. Don't accept being marginalized. It's exhausting at times but when it works, you find yourself in a very good place. When I was less experienced I felt pressured to play the game by the rules of others. I've learned that people value integrity and bravery. Those traits rare in this business and when you live by them, you are respected.

@CD1 You are DOPE. At my agency, I think for those under 35 here, I am easily the largest. I've struggled with being insecure about my body and what to wear and what it says about me. But I've found out I feel most comfortable, confident, and badass when I'm keeping it casual; much like most the men dress in the office everyday. I'm not worried about what I look like, just the work in front of me. And it feels great ✊🏼

Hell yeah, CW2! Love that we've both figured out what works for us. It's tough being big in what I'd consider a visually driven business. I wasted way too many years fretting about it. I'm happy to report that age evens the playing field. After 40, the double takes die down for all of us, and it's really about the work. I'm more confident now than ever before.

like

CD1, that is SO awesome to hear. I feel way more reassured going forward in my career hearing that. Thank you!

This is my first job out of school... so I don't have much experience to speak of. Sometimes my supervisors think I have a lot to bring to the table as far as new age things like social media. Other times I feel like I'm left out on important projects because of my age. I am currently the only AM at a very small company, I work my ass off. I try not to give into the notion that I need to dress or look a certain way to be successful. My entire building is pretty casual... but I do feel my best when I put some effort into makeup and a nice outfit. I do see a slight difference in how I'm spoken to when I don't wear makeup. But it is what it is. I perform just the same either way. My goal is to be promoted by January and take the last open office. 💪🏼

Please elaborate, Havas1.

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

I recently got a job offer from a company I used to work for that has a great work/life balance and culture but has a slower track to get promoted. My current employer has a not great work/life balance but it’s much easier to get promoted. Currently 5 years into my career currently bouncing between a project lead and a discipline manager… it’s a decent pay bump- 30%. But is it worth giving up the future potential advancements ?

I had an online assessment round at Intuit and then a technical round. Both went good. But its been 15 days I am yet to hear back from them. Does intuit send closure/rejection email or is it just implicit? also what is the cooling period for intuit ? and what should be the expected ctc if things go right? Im in a junior position, have excellent feedback, work hard. I make very little $. I had 2 job offers and told my current company I couldn’t afford to stay there. They immediately matched. 4 months later I followed up and the timing of the adjustment will now align with the timing cost of living increases for inflation which apparently I’m ineligible for. Should this exempt me from a cost of living increase due the adjusted salary 5 months after we agreed to this?

I’m actively searching & looking for a new strategist position since my current agency is mismanaging not only myself but the relationship with the client. It’s a dumpster fire.

I’m wondering what questions I should look out for and be aware of as I find myself getting past the HR screens pretty quickly.

Also - if your agency is remote or LA based and hiring, feel free to let me know in the comments as well :)
