You can do it! It’s tough sometimes, but just prioritizing and managing your time as best as you can are life savers. I have 2 kids now, 1 and 4.5 and it’s definitely doable. I’m still the top biller in the office, and I’m ok with leaving a little early to pick the kids up, get them dinner and to bed, and then doing more work in the evenings if needed. I don’t stay in the office until 7 pm anymore, and that’s ok! Some days are better than others- sometimes I feel like I’m putting in too much effort to work and not enough to the family, and other days I end up being mom a bit more than an employee. It all works out though and I live by my calendar and planning ahead!
Not going to lie, it can be tough. My husband is very involved and takes the lion's share of the kid/household duties because he has the more flexible job. We don't live near family so we also rely on the help of a babysitter, a backup babysitter, and friends.
I try to leave the office by 6 so I can see the kids before they go to bed. Once they're asleep, I log back in to finish the day.
To stay connected to my husband, we have a lunch date once a week. His office isn't that far from mine.
Go for it!! Being a mom is the most amazing and fulfilling role in the world. I love being a lawyer and didn’t and wouldn’t give that up but being a mom is on another level.
I’m a single mom and bill more than most. You have to stay focused when at the office and be prepared to work early before they rise and/or after they go to sleep. You can balance it/have it all. If you have a husband to support you and share the responsibility then the same applies, but you’ll have more free time to spend with your husband and kids.
I don't have a partner. Full time lawyer and mom. You just do it.
Agree that you can do it. The baby years are very tough and outsourcing as much as possible helps a little bit. It gets easier as they get older.
Thank you, all very helpful. My biggest pain point (in my head) is managing work. How do manage to stay current with hours?
Very helpful, I’ll try it. Thank you.
