Kristin Cavalari, to be specific :)
Yes, I watch Very Cavalari, #noshame
I’ve seen it be a cultural thing. I have friends in France you do the exact thing. Will post a kid but cover the kid’s face. Their privacy laws are different than here. From the little I’ve looked into it, there may even be a law in France that entitles the kid to a cause of action against the parents when the kid is older for posting an image of them online without their consent.
it might be due to concerns about facial recognition software. some parents don't like to post photos of their children due to concerns that these apps like facebook etc. are data mining using facial recognition software and basically creating digital profiles without consent so it might not be that they are blurring it bc they don't want their IG followers to see it but to still be able to share w/ friends / followers while protecting the child from data mining by the app. we don't post any photos of our child online at all due to privacy / data mining concerns.
Go look up some of the predatory/disturbing stuff that happens online with people's baby and kid videos...I'm talking about people stealing and role playing as parents of other people's kids...all the way to full on pedos...it's really scary stuff.
But even that aside, I think a lot of parents are starting to consider whether it's fair for us to be creating entire social footprints before a child can even consent to it.
I'm currently pregnant and plan to do something very similar. I'll maybe let a large group family picture slide but otherwise it's no picture or limited covered pictures.
Any digital photo sharing will be directly with close family/friends members only via a shared private folder/album or email.
I shared a picture and video recently of me as a proud aunt to my 4 month old niece and covered her face. I'd still like to share the feeling of being an excited aunt but respect my sisters choice for her child's privacy.

This is may be a privacy / consent issue, and/or a privacy / safety issue. For privacy / consent, there is a growing school of thought that people should be able to control their online presence and image (and give consent to be posted or not). While more often seen in celebrities (e.g. Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Bell, Mindy Kaling), some regular people are now ascribing to this and not posting their baby / child’s face for that reason. In these cases, the parent would only post the face when the child is older and able to consent or agree to the post (and understand what that means).
From a privacy / safety standpoint, some people just don’t want people to identify their baby (/child) from an internet picture. There are a lot of different reasons why people might feel this way. I fall into this camp, but I don’t use social media at all (other than LinkedIn). My husband uses IG for work because he works in design and animation. We are private about our own pictures. My in-laws are big Facebook / IG people and my husband and I have already set the boundary that we do not want pictures posted where our daughter’s face is visible on any social media platform. If that means obscuring with an emoji, so be it. More often, it’s a picture of her little feet or the back of her head or similar. But again - we don’t post these ourselves.
All of that to say - I don’t totally understand your friend’s decision unless she’s in the consent camp?
Looks like advocacy/non profit groups are starting to raise awareness about the risks of oversharing kid photos on the internet. Ad from Unicef Norway:

I hope having your account set to private and not being connected to anyone sketchy would prevent strangers with bad intentions from seeing your pics.
