OP, didn’t mean this as “you did something wrong, too bad, live with it”. But your offer is the contractual obligation from them. I don’t know how you would fight it since you signed it and also have been there for a bit now. You could have stirred something up immediately and said this is not what we discussed but now that it’s been out there, I think it becomes more difficult.
Do you have a problem with the person you report to? Did you not know you would be reporting them?
You’re the only one with the details and know the players, so you could have a conversation, “look, I was under this impression. You told me not to worry, but now that I’ve been here, I’m doing this job (here are examples)and I see that the title does matter (here are examples). “ But you have to be able to clearly articulate that and also in your mind know what you’re risking to have that conversation and what it’s really worth (is it really just the title? Or is there money? Seat at the table?)
I sympathize but to all about what this is really worth to you. It’s hard to give good advice as this is a complex issue and I suspect there’s a lot more information that we don’t have.
I would think it it this way:
1. What bothers me? Title, having to report to someone, money, etc.
2. Why now vs 1st day?
3. What am I doing that is VP level? What am I not?
4. What else do I seek beyond just the title?
5. What is the worst and best case scenario? What’s realistic?
6. Am I willing to risk the worst case to get what’s realistic?
Also post it in the main forum and leave out that you’re female. See what people respond with. I suspect you’d get a similar mix with more ruthless responses from the guys.
Hope this helps.
My question is, if I’m doing the work of a VP why can’t I be one? Note: this suppression of title was not clearly communicated to me. Trying not to feel bait and switched but I am. How do I fight for my worth without burning new bridges? I feel like most of my career I’ve been the unofficial <title> that’s always one level behind. I get the responsibilities, sometimes the comp, the invites to mtgs, but never the title. Had a whole philosophical discussion with my boss and HR leader, and they both maintain “titles don’t really matter.” But they do, we all know there’s a hierarchy, and peer level credibility, as well as career growth built on a title. Please help me sound rational while I stand up for myself.
What title does your offer letter state?
Give it more time. I know it sounds cliche but sometimes it takes a first big achievement in the role to get recognition.
That’s tough. I feel like I’ve been in a similar position my whole career as well. When is your first review? Maybe if you kill it up until your first review, build your case, and bring it up then, it would be hard for them to say no? I would also feel bait and switched though
Fair point in that I should have pointed out it was missing the additional term. I honestly thought one was a level and the other a functional role so I couldn’t imagine both wouldn’t be accurate given what I was told in the verbal. I also heard the term repeatedly while settling in so it’s not clear how we are in this “unofficial” space, yet again in my life. So what I’m hearing is: too late, take it, now go earn it. Which is what I’m inclined to do anyway. It is truly interesting that none of us think it’s worth fighting for. Curious- what would a guy do?
Please don’t over think it. Walk in there and ask them to right it or give you a timing to get it fixed. They saw VP potentials in you which was why they hired you so don’t let them undercut you. Don’t think they’ll do it to a man
Agree with what others said in terms of dealing with this going forward , but if that is what the offer letter said, that’s what you got hired for. You should have raised it up back then and said this is not what we discussed, “I verbally accepted because you told me VP, and letter says something else,” and negotiated.
At this point, it is you either leave over this (which maybe is extreme as it seems you like it) or you do as others suggested - give it a bit time and build a brand and look for opportunities to get the title.
How long have you been in the role?
M1 letter stated functional title but the verbal offer said VP. Weird but this company only gives you the letter AFTER you accept so you don’t shop around.
Something similar happened to my friend, her title in the offer was different from the verbal/recruited title. She caught the difference before formally accepting the offer, and was able to go back and get it adjusted. There is always chance to negotiate before things are nailed in writing, since what have “accepted” was only a a verbal offer.
4 months now. It’s my functional title
