OP: The two are not mutually exclusive. Getting awesome shit done quietly, diligently, and consistently is critical I agree, but it is just as critical, ESPECIALLY for women and minorities (keeping it real tonight) to find elegant ways to proudly and firmly communicate our accomplishments without downplaying them. When was the last time you heard a guy on the partner track dismiss his role in a project all like “I didn’t do much…it was a team effort, no big deal”. Yeah. pretty much never.

I don't see a problem with the article. Her advice is around building around your capabilities and confidence. Tell me which has been more productive in your career: getting recognized by SHOWING your managers that you are performing well in your role and building trust and relationships with them or by TELLING people you how awesome you are? No cares how great you say you are and in this article, she is simply saying there are other better ways for you to get noticed than self-promotion. How do you feel when you hang around with a bunch of people who all they can do is talk about themself?

OP here: This is what Cathy attributes to her rising at Deloitte, “Raise your hand”… “Put your head down and get work done” … “Wait for people to notice”… What a mother f*cking crock of shit article. I know women who’ve had their hands raised for 4 years and are still waiting 🙋. As a woman of Deloitte I am embarrassed AF and truly hope that Wharton is responsible for mangling this interview.

Men are always set to broadcast so if women don't self promote no one will be going to bat for you on their own accord. I second bull shit.

I'm not denying a gender and racial gap here. You may have to work harder, absolutely, but it doesn't mean you have to self-promote as hard as you think. It's humbling and respectable when someone says "we did it as a team" vs "I did this, I did that", especially when you KNOW that they're the ones who did all the work. It's not downplaying your skills either, it's balance of humility and quiet confidence - you know your worth and don't need to broadcast it all the time.
