Ladies, if you were going to fancy dinner with a small group of colleagues (couple partners, couple associates), your biggest client and each of their respective wives, what would you wear? Because I’m the only non-wife woman, I want to avoid dressing too professional and sticking out, but I also want to be dressed appropriately for the occasion (and obviously I want to look cute/stylish).

I would honestly lean the opposite of your instinct (to not stick out from the wives). I’d probably go in a black pencil dress with bolder jewelry than I’d wear during the day to the office. You want to look like a lawyer in front of the client, this is a business dinner for you. As the only woman there that isn’t a wife, you don’t want to be mistaken for a wife. To be clear there is nothing wrong with being one of the non-lawyer wives, but that’s not who you are at this dinner. Dress like a lawyer.

I just love the energy you’re bringing here. I tend to lean more “fashion” regardless, but I agree. Be the lawyer, lady!

I would wear a wrap dress with a chic print. Simple accessories.

Something like this

Dark color, sleeves of some kind, something with a belt to be stylish and close to knee length. I’d wear non-work heels- those always give away a dress or outfit as being too “worky.” You could also do jewelry too if that’s your style- something nicer or bigger than what you’d wear to work

like

I'd do some type of solid dress with a more fun accessory like jcrew bold/colorful necklace and then a low heel, with a non blazer blazer (like less structured than what i would wear to court)

like

Pencil dress or skirt with a blouse but with fun shoes maybe and simple accessories. Better to air on the side of professional than trendy given that a client will be coming as well. Have fun!

What type of restaurant? Is it something trendy, menu tasting? We talking per se level or more like a steakhouse?

That is perfect!

Also, I wouldn’t stress too much about the specifics of dressing “professional”, such as worrying about what shoes. Men know nothing about women’s fashion. Works to your advantage.

Back again with a question for the McKinsey folks! 1. Is it true that if you are internal (specifically PD) you are not eligible for a performance bonus? Just base and the 401K profit sharing? 2. I know McKinsey offers a percentage of your salary into a retirement fund. The recruiter painted it as a range (from 7-12%), but other fish in the main consulting bowl said it’s either 7 OR 12% (no in between) based off of if you’re client facing or internal - which is true? Hello All, Looking to learn how California employers are capping accrued vacation. Say accruals increase with years of service and at 10 years an employee accrues 4 weeks per year, versus at 1 year an employee accrues 2 weeks per year. What is the cap for the 1 year (2 weeks) versus the 10 year (4 weeks)? For example, do you cap at 1.5x across the board? Or, does the accrual cap change?

What's your organization's stance on surveys? I've been in the HR department of my organization for a year and a half, we've never sent any type of engagement, satisfaction, NPS, etc. survey to employees. Or is it dysfunctional as an HR department to not be doing surveys?

My view: about 30%. That is still a great number, because it’s far higher than zero.
