The day with a mentoring call with a fresh grad from my Alma mater who also graduated from Engineering who wanted advice on if consulting was any better than the sexism she was facing in industry. I've spent the last week trying to get info on the project I'm supposed to be staffed on, only to find out today that the male Partner, SM and M who haven't been answering my emails or calls cancelled my role without bothering to tell me - for the second time. Looking around the office, women in leadership roles are very few and far between, and those that are seem to be exclusively bubbly and feminine and good at disarming men's insecurities and rolling with gender stereotypes in ways I'm not (power to them, I totally recognize that as a skill). I'm just... Feeling very exhausted and a bit despairing

The burden should not be on women to learn the "skill" of fitting in with men. The burden should be on men to embrace all persons, all genders and experiences and for them to RECOGNIZE their privilege and act accordingly to enable the success and wellbeing of all. This is my expectation of men at my workplace and I try not to waver on it.

Yes yes yes you are NOT alone. Sometimes I feel like the only way to combat this is to be strictly myself. Sometimes being even a tiny bit vulnerable is seen as weakness, but to me it is a powerful strength. I try not to compromise on my beliefs and try to advocate strongly for myself and others. But it is a hardship on some days to even exist without genuine mentorship or representation.

I’ve stopped paying attention to announcements about promotions/changes at the sr leadership level because I know the deal before I read the announcement: “Dude A is retiring/being promoted and Dude B is taking his place!” I’m tired of expert panels and conference speakers being only men. I’m tired of having to fight and insist that I be included in conversations where I am, by far, the SME. I am sick of having to have a strategy for every conversation so that I don’t bruise fragile egos. I’m really weary of people talking crap about women in leadership positions when they don’t take responsibility for everyone else’s feelings. But I also haven’t found an industry that is any better. So it is running and wine and setting boundaries with my time to preserve my sanity!

I feel this way and have absolutely no idea how to deal with it. Thank you for succinctly describing the behavior expected to succeed: disarming men's insecurities by being super bubbly and feminine. I'm trying to change my career outlook but need leadership support to move (my practice leadership is conveniently 100% male). My coach was in disbelief at how unsuccessful I've been in following all of her process suggestions, and resigned to advising me to play the damsel in distress and appeal to men's desire to be saviors or ones who came up with an idea that I'm just going along with. I wonder why I can't be confident, guide my career, and not have to pretend to be vulnerable so that men want to support me in taking ownership of MY career. I'm also looking for positions outside of my firm. Idk that things will change because it's a systemic issue in the corporate world... I can only remain hopeful that the next role I accept isn't overseen by such gender bias.

I have been there! Taking vacation and purposely setting aside time for things that make me happy outside of work has helped. It’s still really tough some days

Salary and/or pay ranges: I got licensed in 2018 and started working for a firm in DC while commuting from Baltimore because of the pay. I hated the job/firm and am obviously in Baltimore now, albeit with a significant pay cut, but the lifestyle/job satisfaction is awesome. There’s not a gargantuan BigLaw presence in/around Baltimore to really skew salary averages, so I’ve been curious as to what types of salary ranges there are around here for junior/senior associates, partners, etc.?

Any good recommended books on how to build a scalable product and team? I'm looking for recommendations for two areas: 1) in general laying the groundwork in a startup to have the tools and especially processes in place to scale, and 2) tactical focus on building a SaaS project. I've been promoted into a management role from Dev roots, so need to learn more PM processes to be an effective manager in day job, plus would like to start building my own SaaS solution.
