I was diagnosed last month.
I actually started seeing a therapist because I thought it was anxiety. She recommended getting tested for ADHD and I made an appointment with the Sachs Center and was diagnosed with ADHD. They recommended medication so I spoke to yet another doctor about what I'm experiencing and we discussed medication/other options
Similar story for me. Went to a therapist for anxiety/depression and she suggested it may be ADHD. I then went to an ADHD specialized psychiatrist (I found them on Psychology Today) and got diagnosed after an assessment. The assessment consisted of several questionnaires prior to the appointment and then I met with the psychiatrist to talk about the answers in depth. There’s a lot of resources online about ADHD and what worked for me was looking at diagnostic criteria and seeing if/how I fit each one, when I remember it starting, and some examples of how it’s affected me through the years. It also helped me to specifically look at how ADHD affects adult women, so many lightbulbs went off after that and it helped me explain my symptoms to my doctor.
The process varies. The first time, I talked to a psychiatrist for maybe 10 minutes and he wrote me a prescription for an amphetamine. Later on, with a different health care provider, I couldn't even get a diagnosis started, but if I had, it would have been very in-depth.

Ugh those are both disappointing responses. I had my appointment yesterday and my pcp was thankfully super receptive. She referred me to neuropsychology for a diagnosis and treatment plan rather than psych (had a bad experience on meds before and trying to avoid them for the time being which she understood). I hope you find more compassionate and responsive doctors.
