This is the weirdest advice you may ever receive. My fear of flying decreased a lot after skydiving. I now always take the window seat and I imagine I could jump out with a parachute if I needed to and all would be beautiful and fine. Again, super strange but so great for me. Or maybe skip the skydiving part and take the window seat and imagine you can fly? 🤷🏼‍♀️

A tip I got for turbulence is to picture being on a boat. When you hit the bumps and jerks is not scary bc you can see the waves coming which rock you. In the air they have the same “waves” which makes the plane move but you can’t see them. Pre-make a play list of calming sounds you like and listen to it on loop. Good books are also helpful!

I should add that I’ve taken Xanax before! It made me really drowsy but I was still awake and trying to be alert/anxious so ended up just feeling weird/like shit. A doctor friend gave it to me so could be that they under-dosed.

You can get a Xanax prescription for the flight. I take it on all my overseas flights and it helps me sleep and not be bothered by stuff while flying.

Go get Xanax. Also research plane crash statistics. You are more likely to be killed by a shark than a plane crash

Can you fly with someone? That helps my phobias immensely. For not over land — I immerse myself in media. Movie, headphones, no map allowed. That’s what I do over oceans. Either dl a set of movies or shows you’re excited about, or make yourself a playlist as soon as you get on the plane

I used to be the same way. My solution was to fly more and it grew my comfort. Short term solution is if you’re in economy, sit in the middle section and ideally on the aisle. Keeping me away from the window helped a lot. Also don’t watch the flight map. It would bolster my anxiety 10x especially over the ocean.

Audio book with noise cancelling headphones - find a guilty pleasure book/something enthralling/a comfort read. Basically give yourself permission and the option to focus on something other than the flight itself.

I second what everyone says about get a prescription but I would recommend Ativan over Xanax. It does the same thing but is longer lasting. Also, until then, deep breaths! You will be fine and once you land on the other end, you will have conquered one of your fears!

Same, I hate that the only efficient way to travel is by plane. I love traveling but am so scared of flying. I just bury myself in a movie or some super loud music and hope for the best when flying over water/experiencing turbulence.

I’m about to get on a 10 hour flight today and I’ve packed melatonin and delta 8 CBD gummies. I took an Ambien last time but I stayed awake with my anxiety and that was a weird experience, do not recommend.

Thanks all! I wonder if there is counseling or some kind of simulation that can help to overcome this fear. It’s been a lifelong thing for me and these suggestions are good but I think the underlying anxiety/fear would still be there

I used to get crazy anxious on flights (and still do a bit) but find that a drink or two plus some CBD really mellow me out. I also try to get the window seat because having control to have the window open helps me feel safer so I can look out and see what’s happening outside. Sorry to those who like to sleep hahaha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, I try to think about how being in a car or bus or boat has “turbulence” all the time we just don’t think about it. I learned that the real danger that comes from turbulence isn’t a plane crash but that the bag compartments will open and someone will get bashed in the head and die that way, or fall and hurt themselves or others, so that’s why they need to take it seriously!

Oooo also like someone said above, sit over the wing!! Center of balance is there typically

- esp for a long flight: tell one of the crew members (maybe also upfront before boarding) that you get scared during flights very easily. They may go out of their way to comfort you :) - when I get seriously scared (esp during turbulence), I try to look at someone who looks like they travel a lot and see how they react, or I try to look at the staff crew. If they don’t seem worried, that always calms me down a little and reminds me that „it‘s just in my head“ :)

Started working a week after graduating last May. Was on track to be one of the top staff performers and then COVID hit. Since working from home I am one of the lowest performers. Anxiety and stress are crippling my ability to succeed. I have social anxiety which makes wfh communication extremely difficult. Should I be concerned for my career with lack of billable projects? Background: Analyst hired out of undergrad in July 2020.
