Laid off a week ago and scared shitless. Feel depressed, worthless, and terrified I won’t find another job ever again. Just started an SSRI I won’t be able to afford once my insurance runs out.

Oh and it may take a while to find a job, but you will (at least that’s what people tell me and I try to believe them). In the meantime tho, enjoy this time off and do the things you always said you’d do if you had more time in the day... work out, cook, call old friends, go to museums, etc.

Ok deep breath. Here are all my tips for uninsured prescriptions:

Most important, see if there is an option for a 3 month supply of your prescription and fill it asap before your insurance runs out. Many do this but it’s never clear that it’s an option until they randomly ask you if you want it.

If you refilled recently and won’t be eligible for one more by the time your insurance runs out, see if your doctor can write a script for a different dosage to sneak it in. No idea how this works and whether it’s actually insurance fraud and your doctor will laugh at you, but I recently (legitimately) experimented with changing a dose, and 60 5mg pills was considered a whole new prescription even though it replaced 30 10mg pills of the exact same drug. That was a controlled substance and I was able to fill it right away with coverage. Worth a shot, might be less sketchy given that you started the drug recently and SSRIs always take some tinkering.

Dosages also can vary significantly in price. If you go out of pocket, have your doctor compare options. A 20mg pill isn’t necessarily double the cost of a 10mg pill, so cutting in half or doubling up to reach your dose can be way cheaper.

Seconded on GoodRx, I saved significantly with them. It’s sort of annoying, the prices come up differently and I still don’t understand the difference between a coupon and a discount, but it’s cheaper than anything else I’ve seen and its free. I’ve had a few pharmacists stare at me blankly or try to tell me it’s only coinsurance when I try to use it. Convince them to scan it “just so you can see” - it always goes through.

If you are in NYC I’ve found much cheaper prices at Target than Duane Reade or regular Walgreens pharmacies, sometimes even a bit less than the GoodRx prices. I’ve heard the same about Costco types of places if you have that in your area.

Good luck, I know this doesn’t address the rest of your post, but pharmaceutical matters are really all I’m good for at the moment. I’m in the same boat as you and have done nothing to make use of my insurance before it’s up, including bothering to find out when it expires, so thanks for the kick in the ass to get on that, I’m getting anxious just writing this stuff.

Been there. You have to give yourself a purpose outside of looking for a job. Preferably something that involves getting out of the house. Do a project you always wanted to do but didn’t have time before. Go for a walk. Volunteer for something. Find free coupons to do stuff you never would do before (I played miniature golf, lol). I did eventually find a much better job and am way happier than before so it all turned out to be a blessing. I also ended up with a lot of new friends from getting out more. But it seemed pretty bleak there for a while. Hang in there my friend.

I was put on an SSRI a few months ago myself. If you got put on a brand name drug, there’s a good chance the manufacturer has a discount program that you can sign up for on their website. I signed up for a program that takes $100 off of a $450/mo drug. It’s not that much, but every bit counts.

It’s totally understandable to feel that way when you’ve received a blow—don’t pile on by beating yourself up about it! Also, you can look (within 60 days of your last day of coverage) to apply for a plan on your state marketplace exchange which may help cover meds and therapy if COBRA is too expensive. If you want to go without insurance, download the app GoodRX and it’ll tell you the price of medications at different nearby pharmacies and give you discount codes. My antidepressant was actually cheaper not through insurance than through it.

helpful

The tip about GoodRX is amazing, thank you! I am struggling with inertia and just sitting around, laying. Week two can and will be better...

like

Totally!! Also, you’ll have dips (I just did after final round interview that I was told they wanted me for but then didn’t make an offer) but you could choose to look at it as “funemployment” sometimes too and make other people jealous of all the time you’ve got to play this summer!

like

If you do want insurance tho, you either have to start your COBRA coverage right away (you pay retroactively even if you skip a month or two bc it’s “continuation of coverage”) and you only have 60 days to qualify for marketplace special enrollment. No one told me that and I missed it by a day

helpful

Also asking your doctor for a higher prescription and then cutting them in half helps a prescription last longer- I used to get 40s when I needed 20s a
