Laid off by L.E.K. as a consultant. It was a humbling experience. I feel sort of stuck right now. What should I be thinking about in terms of next steps? If I want to give consulting another go, do I have a chance at another practice?

1)Get unemployment asap.
2) Review finances/where you can cut spending
3) update resume
4) spend 1 hour a day job searching - edit resume to be specific to job - try to get a referral from a mutual contact at that company. (But do it in an unabrasive way)
5) do doordash, Uber eats, fiverr - 3/4 hours a day
6) refocus on health/fitness
7) reflect on where you want to go/who you want to be and take steps to align your life to that

SC1 - it’s the minimum time but varies. I put that because 1) it can be exhausting 2) the success metric is not just submitting a resume. It’s also editing the resume to fit the job description, applying and then setting up time to talk to a connection so they can refer you. 3) depending on finances, a layoff can be a blessing that allows you to slow down and see to other things in life that you’ve put on the back burner. So if you’re working part time, going to the gym, running errands - creating balance so you don’t burn out and find yourself in a negative space is important

BCG - like Amazon said, it depends on the state. The maximum in Texas I think is $2196/month, which is still a mortgage payment. So something that will pay some bills is better than nothing

I worked at LEK and a Big 4 and LEK has very high performance standards for SC and EM (and beyond) as compared to a Big 4, so maybe a Big 4 would be better and try to look at why your case performance was not deemed good enough. Maybe slightly longer term implementation work would suit you, or maybe specific industries.
But in short try to think why LEK did not work out and what you did do well and try to find that environment. And don’t give up if you want to do this work for a few more years, it is all possible.

Sorry why did I say MBB, I meant Big 4! Yes.

Everyone at LEK wants to pretend like layoffs aren’t happening. Y’all should KNOW that some private firms like to guise layoffs as performance based in a downturn to protect their reputation against the perception of not doing well. Just admit it that you might be cutting some costs.

likefunnysmart

It’s not considered a lay off. I really don’t mind ranting about the faults of working here but this really isn’t a lay off and what is being discussed is whether or not the person can do the work, which is something that would happen at any firm

MBB time baby suit up

like

OP- I feel for you. But this is not a layoff. A layoff means your employment was terminated to cost employee costs, and not at all due to negative performance. If employment is terminated due to performance issues, you were fired. Again, not trying to be a jerk, but you’re gonna get folks all up in a tizzy if you incorrectly say you were laid off.

like

To answer your question, though, yes. You can absolutely move into another firm, and many folks have done this and succeeded. Many have also found that consulting isn’t for them. I would just try to really sit down and think about how to positively spin your experiences and reason for leaving LEK

like

You the same person as a couple days ago? Or is LEK legit doing lay offs now

likefunny

Yeah we’re just in the middle of our 6 month review cycle so a few folks are getting let go. I sit in the meetings up the C2 level (I’m an M) and can 100% confirm anybody who is let go is being let go purely for performance reasons. We are still hiring tons of people at every level.

That firm is toxic. Might be tough right now, but keep your head up. You are better off in the long run (IMO).

like

Hasn’t been toxic in my experience? It’s been great

The real quick is are you on a visa right now?

LEK firing everyone huh?

like

How long were you at LEK for? If not very long then you might be able to just not include on your resume at all. If it was 1yr+ make sure you try to utilize any network you might have built there to see if folks know of any fitting places based on seeing your work. Sorry, that's definitely a tough thing to go through, but on the bright side isn't this kind of failure the thing that motivational speakers always say gives you the fuel to reach your potential? Harness that and show them what they're missing!

Were you fired or did you get a "mutual separation agreement" type of situation? If its the latter, you're more likely to be able to spin this. If it's the former, I would take a look at training and upskilling, or even volunteering to help your resume while you apply for new jobs, and consider if consulting is right for you and if it is right for you right now

like

What were the reasons for getting laid off ? Assuming reasons are tied to core consulting skills, what changes are you willing to make to become a better consultant at your next gig

OP, let me know if I can help. I have a couple of ins with other firms that do similar work but might be better fits in terms of incoming expectations. DM me if you wanna chat.

I got laid off and will be removed from the firm's website soon. When a potential employer asks the question "why do you leave your current job", should I tell the truth? If I do, would they assume that I was underperforming even it is a massive layoff (like why me not my colleagues)? If I don't, the timing reveals it anyway so they may see me as dishonest. Any advice?
