Laid off from AMLaw200 firm due to coronavirus. Had great grades first year of law school. Top of class. Able to secure summer associate position at this firm, led to first year associate position. But I did poorly after the first year of law school and graduated below 3.0 gpa. Do I have a shot at another big law firm? Seems that so many place an emphasis on grades rather than relevant experience. *sigh*

Let’s see who remembers their MPRE. Just found a position at my dream firm I would like to interview for; however, I was also just placed on a deal where dream firm is the opposite counsel. I don’t want my current firm to know I’m thinking of leaving in case I don’t, so asking for a conflicts waiver doesn’t seem feasible. But the deal won’t close until next year, so I doubt the position will be around if I wait that long. Any advice?

I joined fishbowl a month ago and while I’ve seen a couple contentious debates but I must say I’m pleasantly surprised at how respectfully ppl comment on this app even when disagreeing. Usually anonymity on the internet brings out the absolute worst in ppl; they type things anonymously that they would NEVER say in person smh. But I really haven’t seen horrible comments here. How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I’ve been super stressed about it and don’t know how to move on to May with the proper mindset to make up for as much time missed as possible. CA courts are still closed, and I’m worried I won’t be able to exceed (or even meet) my May goal after April.

Does anyone know how litigation finance works on the plaintiff side? If someone wanted to bring a lawsuit against their former employer would a general contingency arrangement with a plaintiff’s firm make sense? Or would one need to find funding and then contact a plaintiff’s firm to actually handle the case? I’m a transactional lawyer, so this is out of my wheelhouse.

About to turn down a job offer that would nearly double my salary after speaking to several former associates of the firm and hearing some not so great things. The word “sweatshop” was used multiple times yet I am still having a hard time wrapping my head around it. This is truly “you can’t pay me enough to be part of that” in action. I am betting that I can get the same money at a place with a better culture - hopefully I am right!

Anyone have a good billable hours goal tracker tool /app to recommend? I tried to make one but I suck at Excel (and math.) Need to stay on track and make extra hours for the rest of this year. For several reasons, most of which were out of my control, my hours are low so far and it's my first year as a lateral with this firm.

I’m a third year but only 4 months into a brand new practice area. At what point should I feel like I can handle a new client with little to no direction from the partner? Truthfully, I feel like a first year all over again (most days) even though I’m enjoying the new area (from ID to construction/real estate).

Probably a foolish question: are bonuses based off of raw billable hours or billable hours modified by the partners?

Is there any logic in expecting lawyers to be glued to their seats when there are no deals/matters on? I don’t understand why law firms haven’t adopted the consulting model...
