Last night I was looking through pictures on my phone. I was such a happy kid and young adult and even after joining the firm I’m at I was happy for 2ish years…..the past 4 have been awful and depressing though. Man I wish I could go back to that time and do things over.

You have 30+ years of your career left. You are nowhere near the end of your career. Plenty of time to refocus on next steps that will make you happier.

A lot of people (including myself) are feeling this way. I’m considering an internal transfer, to try to see if that gets me excited for work again. I feel exactly how you feel every morning and can’t do this for 20+ more years. For context, 8 years at big 4 going on yr 3 as manager. But hang in there and keep reflecting, and talk to your mentors and people you trust. They can help you pin point what is making you unhappy and help you figure out which way to pivot. You gotta do what is best for you 💕

What are you doing in accounting? It's never too late to make a change. Think about what's ruining your happiness, and how you can remove that barrier to taking care of yourself. Maybe that means an internal transfer. Maybe a transfer to a new firm. Maybe going private. Maybe using your savings to take a few month break between your new job and your next, and go backpacking. If you're employed in public accounting, the market is hot. There has never in my memory been a time when employees have more negotiating power for what they need to have work life balance and take care of their mental health. You can do this!!!!

OP- audit is looking for people right now (as I'm sure you know). I work in financial services assurance, and we're hiring some really fantastic employees. Most of the people I started with left for private (classic public accounting!) but I really love all the people I currently work with. Maybe look into going back into audit at your firm or another firm? I talk to people all the time, and as a manager the best value add I can do is taking care of my team and helping train people up. Sounds like audit may be a good fit for you. I personally don't like beer, but have coworkers who (precovid) went out for happy hour often. Now they're very rare thanks to delta, but they still had a happy hour send off for someone who left recently

Wasting time reminiscing is not good. Start prepping for Q3 and you will feel much better! Make a goal to read the entire ASC740 guide before Q3 begins!

At what age do you stop taking a bath with your child? My 3 year old & I were in the bath together and suddenly he reached out to my chest and said “mumma, your lungs are outside, mine are inside my body” I was so embarrassed! I told him that those were my breasts and that grown ups have slightly different body parts. I normally take a quick shower before him and sit in the tub with him, as that’s our bonding time. I was wearing underpants so thankfully he didn’t notice my non-existant penis

Considering leaving my agency after just a couple months in pharma - feeling underutilized and stuck. My question: do I leave this stint off my resume entirely? List the parent agency instead of the wellness arm? Pass it off as freelance? Not trying to be dishonest I just know this experience probably isn’t relevant when going out for non-pharma jobs.

I'm so frustrated. I've been working for 10 years and I can't get an interview for Senior AD roles, but I get tons of enthusiastic calls for Intermediate ones. Im doing the work of a senior now - concepting alone, working direct with clients, guiding the odd junior - and I do a lot of stuff for the community at large that shows leadership (like conference stuff). I've had CDs review my book and they say my work is great. Why can't I land a senior job? I want to manage, I have good ideas. WTF?
