Hmm.. I’d personally go back to long distance for a few years, but it sounds like you weren’t a fan.
I say that because what I didn’t know, is that long term relationships evolve quite a bit over time (in my experience). Year 4 was super formative in my own relationship.

I think it depends on what is tying you to NYC. I live in a progressive city in a very conservative state. Have for most of my life. If you’re renting or own and could rent out - why not give it a go? You could always move back. I made a move in my 20s to a less progressive city to be with someone - it ended after two years as we realized the distance is what made us so passionate with each other. But I didn’t regret it because I made some of my very best friends for life by doing so.
Oh and then after a couple of years I moved back to my city and my career took off. So that was also a plus.
