Where's Manager 1? 🤔
Because he doesn't have the time, it's a quick task, might teach you a thing or two. I do stupid tasks like this for my partner all the time. I draft her emails to send, just as she drafts emails for the head of our practice to send.
I see lots of clients where the first time I hear about them/what they do is the first time I work with that client. Sure a lot of times I can usually name 1 or 2 peers off the top of my head, but it's not unreasonable to want some actual research on the whole universe of their competition. Not just names, but revenue, size, scale/complexity.
You'd be shocked how often clients don't really understand what markets they participate in, who else plays there, and especially the extent to which their perceived competitors are actually focused in adjacent markets that they themselves are absent from.
I'm with you OP, I find it absolutely disgusting that (some) managers thru MDs don't know the market their clients operate in and yet wonder why the client hates their stupid ass sales pitch they keep trying to jam down the clients throat.
Your job as a consultant is to deliver new value to the client be it tech or strategy or process or taxes Take a goddamn hour, possibly one of the zillion hours that the clients pays for, to read your clients financial statement, Wikipedia page to understand their history, and a Google search to see recent articles and publicity. It's really not that fucking hard and goes a long way when you show the client you actually know what they're going thru not focused on your stupid deliverable and that's it.
I am by no means beneath stupid tasks, but for one of the leads on the account to not know their client's competition?
Or why he can't google shit because it's literally what it takes in 2017
Exactly A1, well said!
🙌 A1. EXACTLY!!!
They are taking the time... they are asking OP to do the research......
M2 this is not a delegation matter since any little piece of information can brought up and used as a great value-add/sales pitch. Getting a summarized version will water down all the benefits.
A1: That is exactly what the SM is looking for. Details and not a synopsis. He just gave a problem statement to OP and if the OP spent time on understanding and getting the SM what he needs, instead of wondering why the SM does not know, everyone would be happy.
