Last summer I mentored an intern who was later taken on full-time by a different team at our agency. Today I found out he has a 2 month shoot in Tahiti while I'm here stuck making banners. I know...

Hell, I'M jealous!

like

Hey!! No ganging up on OP!! I know I've felt the same way many times. I'm extremely vocal, but this us still a sexist business and guys are still taken more seriously and promoted more. 15 years, several agencies, different cities... same shit.

like

The only time I mentioned gender was when I said it's probably NOT a gender thing. How is that crying wolf exactly? Sheesh.

like

That’s why you start every script with “we open on a sandy Tahiti beach”

like

Why is everything a gender thing? EVERYTHING doesn’t have to do with being a woman. He works on a different team. If he worked on your team and they selected him OVER you AND your work was better than his, then you’d have something to talk about. This is just a bad luck, wrong place, wrong time situation. You can be jealous, but don’t decrease the validity of actual gender discrimination cases by crying wolf. Sorry, but that really pisses me off. As women we need to be stronger and smarter than that.

like

We don't know the culture at OP's agency and the teams. It could be a gender thing, it could not be. Only OP can determine that. The point is feeling jealous in a situation like that is normal OP. Keep your head down and be awesome. Forget about the former intern. He's probably fetching coffee in Tahiti.

like

I have had this happen a few times and not just with men. When I was a junior copywriter I once, one of the agency partners loved the intern and gave him the same bonus as me during the holidays, he's now a creative director. Also had a junior writer that only graduated college in 2010 that is now a creative director. Sometimes people are just more liked than others - just part of life.

like

...it's probably nothing to do with gender but this felt like a punch to the gut. Talk me down, ladies, please.

like

I mentored an intern who was hired a year later as a mid level (I’m still a junior). His daddy got him the job though.

Sr Art Director, here's what I recommend: Work on learning how to assume less, about things or people or anything you lack info about. Dial down the smug tone. Read my comment a few more times, especially the full sentence from which you took the last two words. Anything further is not contributing to the OP and topic at hand, so I won't be addressing you.

like

Hopefully the universe will pay you back with something else that's just as awesome.

like

^ So it IS about gender? Nobody (at least I'm not) is "ganging up" on OP. I'm just not clear what the issue we're supposed to address. Sounds like OP is jealous and disappointed the former intern got on a team that's getting to go to Tahiti. I'd be jealous, too. It's only human. The gender without any other context at all is completely random and sounds like a far fetched connection.

like

Far fetched!?!?! I recommend you talk to more women.

like

OP... you may not say it's gender, but I say it is the biggest part if the problem. You may not have been directly targeted, but situations like yours have been and are still happening to women everywhere (most definetly in creative depts.) I found a lot if help in other women, women who became my mentors, women as copywriting partners. Know that there are still women who will gaslight you and minimize your fears. Those were the most heartbreaking to me. But they're not the majority. Stand tall and continue carving your path. And when you have the chance, support other women as well.

like

I think you're just jealous? Especially without knowing literally no other details about the situation. Not sure what the connection between you and his situation is...

P.S. I recently went to visit some friends at an old shop and discovered the copy intern during my time there was now SVP ACD. I was in shock. It's "only" been 7-8 years. I'm still WTF about it, lol

Saying it's probably not means you think it might be. You're posting in the women's bowl that revolves around women's issues in the workplace. You asked that we talk you down off a ledge - what injustice are you referring to that drove you to a ledge then?

Account Director 1... ha!! Welcome to Fishbowl.

@Executive Creative Director 1 Lol yes

Ok OP, here's my advice. Speak up more, ask to be put on an interesting pitch or project when you hear about it and DON'T wait for someone to say "OP has been working hard and she deserves it". (I bet Mr Intern spoke up and someone got this opportunity....) (And THAT is a gender thing - women do good work and expect recognition while men go after it. )

Advice please, especially if you hire. Going to law school and choosing between UPenn law and Michigan law. Scholarship at Michigan and will graduate with about 90,000 less in debt from Michigan. So better chance of finding an internship in philly where I don't have to leave my family during the summer. Also thinking about going into politics or back into consulting.

Should I switch or learn the language and stay here for another year? It's a small firm and the pay is not that great but good for beginners in the country. Any advice?

Any suggestions for a cpa firm that is family oriented, value staffs, and relatively has variety of staffs coming from different background? Thanks

Boomers are often considered selfish, right? Consider the following: People over the age of 75 comprise 54% of COVID deaths. At that age, the actuarial tables aren’t exactly favorable to begin with. By contrast, people under the age of 50 comprise 7% of COVID deaths. Throwing the world into a state of absolute chaos (thereby sticking younger generations with the long-term consequences) is next level.
