Last week our school provided some training on recognizing emotionally at-risk students (for Mental Health Awareness Week). Now, all I do is worry that i'm missing signs that one of my students needs help. I guess the training didn't work?

I hear you. You want to make sure your students are ok.

it's good that you're now aware of the signs

Ah the overthinking trap. Lol. I have been there. My wife is a psychologist and when I was in my first couple years I second guessed all of the things I saw students do. I think she wanted to muzzle me with all the questions I had. Basically her rule of thumb was that these warning signs will be pervasive. Meaning that if I see a sign once or maybe twice it may mean nothing at all. If it becomes commonplace then I need to be concerned. She said to remember that kids are going through puberty and all of them handle that differently. I was super confused by all of it for the first several years. Hang in there. It will become easier to see.

I would suggest discussing these signs you are afraid of missing with a colleague who also has these same kids. Comparing notes could shed light on if it is a sign or not.

The training must have worked. When in doubt, follow the steps you’ve been given and don’t second guess yourself.

I start every class with a social emotional check-in. Someone said early on that students will not remember the online lesson, but they will recall a teacher that was concerned about how they felt.

I can’t talk to any of my friends about this because it’s so uncertain and I’ll be embarrassed if I can’t pull it off, but… I think I’m going to change careers! It’s crazy to even consider—I will have to go back to school, possibly go into debt, lose two years of income advancement and retirement saving while studying, start over in rank, and completely uproot my life. But… I think I want this? Talk me in or out of this, please my fishes!

Okay, so I’m a young high school ESL teacher (19 years old, already certified and graduated college two years early). I get slack all the time from older teachers that are jealous because they see good performance numbers from my students however in reality, I just love teaching and have been doing it since I was 9! How do you deal with jealousy from teachers always judging every little thing about you?

I was so excited because the other day, one of my most difficult students typed into our Google chat that he thought I was a great teacher. This comes from a child who would be very defiant when in person last year. I have looped with my class from last year and that was such a great feeling! He even apologizes when he has been impolite. Now we are going back to in person instruction and I am unsure if he will be with me since his mom chose virtual learning all year.
