Last year was the first year my husband and my combined income was too much for our Roth contributions. We had to roll them back. We are currently keeping most of our savings fairly liquid with the plan to buy a house in a couple years. What can/should I be doing this year to do some retirement prep while focusing on house prep too?

You don’t roll back. You recharacterize to a traditional IRA and then convert back to a Roth.

This. The mad fientist blog has a good post explaining how to do this . It's not too hard but make sure you don't have anything in your T IRA before

I don’t understand that about your income being too much. Why didn’t you do backdoor or mega backdoor Roth?

Mega backdoor Roth doesn’t have to do with the income limits I believe. That’s just an intricacy based on your employer’s 401k policy

I’m contributing post-tax 401k offered by my employer to take advantage of the mega backdoor Roth. How often do people roll it over to their Roth IRA account? Like every month? Im 35. Considering to start investing in Real Estate this year. Looking to buy 1 property to start generating cash flow, but most importantly, long term equity. No plans to sell. Condo or Single family residence. Considering booming areas like Austin, Vegas or somewhere with potential to grow. Will need local help, since I don’t live there (realtor + property manager). Already have 20% down, but considering putting less. All closing fees are also covered. Is this a good idea or should just wait?

Currently looking to refinance my first home (4.125) and considering a few options. What do you recommend?

Background: 36, single and hoping to meet someone, would move from townhome at that point. Would like to save on interest & reduce costs in the time being. No other expenses but car is 10 years old and would prob need a new one within 5 years.

Loan amt: $220k
Current Principle + Interest 4.125% : $1104

Refinance options:
7/6 arm 2.25%: $848
30 yr 2.87%: $920

new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. I still have the question of do individuals that take the index fund route… do you all purchase the same funds for different accounts? Example, would you invest in VTSAX across a brokerage and roth account, or would you take a different approach for each account?

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

I have a lot of student debt from law school. I’ve refinanced a couple of times and received the best fixed rate available, but I’ve seen others refinance with a variable rate which of course is lower. I’ve read some other comments of people refinancing at a super low variable rate....isn’t this risky? Of course I am afraid of going variable and then the interest rates going up a lot. Am I missing something?
