Late night thoughts - I cannot figure out when to throw in the towel on consulting. I just switched to a Big 4 role two weeks ago and I feel like my stress has shot up significantly. Just in two weeks.. I mean are you coming from an industry role and you are staffed on project immediately!?
It can be seen in many ways.. your profile must be running in the market so sure you can bank upon it and keep looking for something better that suits your wlb or if you can sustain, wait for one performance cycle and look out. If the problem continues, talk to your project manager on what you need help with.. your PM and Coach but should/need to support you for success. Best wishes to you!

Also don’t call yourself a failure.. consulting as an environment is different very fast paced and at times can take away harmony from our lives. You should put yourself and your well being first. Never call yourself a failure bro!

That’s consulting. None of us are experts in the beginning. We’re just really good at staying one page ahead of the client.

Don’t be afraid to get out of it. Don’t stay in to “not be seen or feel as a failure” if you stay it’s because you are pushing boundaries. If it’s overwhelming, you don’t have a supportive crew or the lifestyle isn’t for you. Listen to your body and get out

I came in as an experienced hire a year ago with 16+ years in industry. My first project I was like WTF have I done?? Working late nights and stressed out. It’s a really rough transition. I considered going back but who would I be if I gave up so easily? Luckily that project ended and I got staffed to another. Very happy I stayed, I like what I’m doing, I like the people I’m working with and I found a great support system. Reach out to your counselor, a buddy, anyone else you know that has gone through it. The MD on my current project realized what had happened to me and we meet every two weeks. DM if you want.

Just realize the first 5 years is often the most difficult because you are still learning everything while trying to look like an expert. It gets much easier with far less hours and stress once become an expert and you can start delegating tasks.

I knew in my latest role that it wasn’t a good fit. Recruiter and hiring manager pulled a bait and switch, which was revealed 2 weeks in. Take care of you.

Get back out there and interview and also try to make the current role work. You can pursue multiple paths at once and make the choice that makes the most sense for you.

Discuss this with your people manager. I am sure your network (people manager, project manager, practice leadership, etc.) can help you and coach you.

Feeling overwhelmed when joining is normal and the transition from industry to consulting is not easy, but your network (albeit new) can definitely support you throughout this. Also, please remember that we are a people business - we need (and should) take care of our people to make sure they succeed.

You will thank yourself for knowing your limits. Don't stay and harm yourself in the long run. Burn out will follow you to your next role if it happens. Please take proper care of yourself.
