Lateraled to a new firm and like the people and work, but support is abysmal. Barely any juniors, few paralegals, assistants assigned to too many attorneys. How to tell whether it’s worth sticking it out?

Start jobhunting kiddo. Tell prospective new employers that your current firm did not deliver on a number of promises made in the recruitment process.

Want to refer me to your group? Current 2nd year with a SSC clerkship and big firm experience

I’ve been at two biglaw firms in a large secondary market; this has been my experience at both.

If you believe in “250k OTE” with no base then you prob believe in Santa still too. “OTE IS anywhere from 20k-250k” aka we have one guy ever that made that and the rest of you will not hit numbers and we will blame you, not the process .

So are these layoffs really around the corner?

Lateral interviewer asked me “why my firm wasn’t doing anything to retain me”… honestly, it made me sincerely doubt if I was even worth something.

Recently graduated from a Canadian law school with a C average. I have landed a summer job every summer since I started and will be at a midsized full service firm going forward. However, my goal was to land a job in NY or Cali making 180k+ in the next few years. How slim are my chances of lateraling to the US?

Recommendations for firms to look into in South FL? I'm in Ft. Lauderdale but am open to Boca or Miami. I'm a first year associate in ID (coverage issues) but really would prefer transactional work. More importantly though, I'm looking for companies who pay relatively well (doesn't necessarily have to be market), are open to remote/hybrid work, aren't sweatshops. I'd settle for insurance work if theres good WLB & $$$ lol

For the associates facing layoffs disguised as “performance-based cuts,” stay resilient. You will bounce back. Your old firms, however, aren’t fooling anyone, especially not their big name clients. We know what’s really going on.

Does Dentons pay market?

This job would be significantly easier and more tolerable if I could just consistently bill 40-50 hours a week, but no, some weeks are 20 and others are 80. And I can’t even enjoy the 20 hour weeks because I’m stressed about whether I’m eventually going to get work lol.

If you are leaving your firm and putting in your two weeks notice, what should be on your checklist to make sure your transition is the smoothest, both for you and for the firm you’re leaving?

Why do ppl hate on northwestern mutual? I do get calls from them but dont hear them out bc i am already biased (without really knowing whether they really are useless). Has anyone used and found them useful?

Why is it that being an attorney is the only career where you’re not allowed to say what you do for work, just as anyone else would, without people thinking you sound braggadocious/pretentious?

Current mid level lit associate at an AM Law 200, big by number of attorneys but not true “big law” firm. What is the practicality of a “lateral” move to a true heavy hitter at a secondary office like Miami. Can check some boxes with current billable, moot court, law journal, but lack the stellar grades. T50 law school.

Whoever runs @Biglawboiz is so insufferable.

Are there any normal middle of the road juniors, or is it all either people who want to dip at 5 PM or people who are freaking out that they’re only billing 45 hours in the second week of stub year? Today I had to lecture one of my juniors twice about the fact that he shouldn’t be staying up until 4 AM doing non-urgent shit, and then had to lecture another junior because he goes AFK at like 4pm whenever he feels like it. ???

Received a windfall and don’t need to work for money again. Want to quit my toxic BL gig right this moment but I am handling a handful of clients on my own who need a ton of help getting their affairs in order + have closings pretty much every week through year end. Responsible/not burn bridges thing to do would be to give notice now and finish out the year but now I have 0 motivation to do anything other than to rent a beach house and relax

I recently lateraled to big law from a medium to large sized firm. I was generally very happy with the people I worked with at the previous firm and moderately happy with the work I was doing. I left because I was concerned about the viability of the firm, but I really hate my new firm. People aren’t as nice as I’m used to, no positive reinforcement, etc. My old firm told me I was always welcome to come back. How long do I wait to go back if that’s ultimately what I decided I wanted to do?

I wrote the entirely of a memo that was filed with a partners name on it. I want to use it as a writing sample for a job app. I don’t know exactly what the rules are here but I don’t want to ask for permission to use it but I also don’t want trouble. Am I being super paranoid here or can a prospective firm somehow show my firm/partner my application materials?

Seeing that the compatibility of Marxist views with working in big law has been a major discussion point, here’s my take:

I strongly believe that capitalism and eternal growth is doomed to fail, and to end capitalism as quickly as possible, capitalism should be intensified.

Where does that happen? Through big law! I could quit, become a weird activist only my own echochamber listens to, or work to self-destruct capitalism while living a financially secure life myself.

What are year break-offs for junior, mid level, or senior? 3-3-3?
