Lateraling from a micro boutique. I don't know what to expect. Any advice for adapting and flourishing in the first few weeks?

When they take down opposing counsel it looks a lot like gulliver’s travels

“Flourishing” in the first few weeks seems like an impractical goal - if you mean setting yourself up in the first few weeks to succeed later, would say get to know as many people as possible, tell them about your experience, what you’d like to work on, ask how you can help with their projects etc so you can integrate asap.

Agree with this! Just lateraled and really didn’t have much billable work the first 3-4 weeks. I focused a lot on learning the systems and tech, meeting people, going to Pg meetings, etc. This was week 5 and I billed ~50!

Be enthusiastic. Be friendly. Meet and chat with as many people as you can. Ask questions. Frequently check in with your senior associates/partners, even if you’re just giving them a status report or asking how the case or matter is going. Always ask how you can help (better yet, proactively suggest things you could do, no matter how small, and see if they want you to do it). Ask for feedback frequently. Enthusiastically accept all work and matters thrown you way. You can, and should, set boundaries later.

Keep asking for work and you’ll be fine.

I’m an associate trying to exit biglaw and there is a current job posting for in-house counsel at one of the firm’s smaller clients.
