Laterals — how long was your ramp up period? I’m a month and some change in and still don’t have enough work and I’ve been very proactive in trying to seek it. How long to wait before you know this is a real problem? Enough of a problem to look elsewhere?

I’m at 2.5 months and still haven’t billed over 30 hours in a week… definitely starting to be concerned. We’re also still recruiting like crazy so I think it’s going to be an issue soon.

I’m week 3 and am just starting to bill over 20 hours a week. I’ve heard that slow ramp ups are the norm, but I definitely understand the anxiety!

I’m at week 3 and just billed over 8 hours in a day for the first time yesterday

It was about 4 months. Much slower than I expected. Thankfully the firm has taken responsibility and said that it’s on them and not me that I haven’t had enough billables. But after 5 months I definitely have more than enough work.

The partners in my group said it would take me a few months to ramp up…was over 40 hours by my 2nd week

I just hit one year after a lateral move. It took a few months to really get a good flow of work going, particularly billable work. I was able to fill gaps with investment time in doing a presentation and working on a business development project. And thankfully my firm acknowledged that it was normal and expected to have the slow ramp up. Completely swamped now!

It took me 6 months to be regularly busy. Most firms understand it takes time and won’t blame the lateral.

Depends on the practice group and if they just finished a big trial and are in a lull or if this is indicative of lack of work in general. Figure out how much the other associates in your group are billing. If they don’t have much more than you then I wouldn’t worry about it, but still continue to reach out to partners in your office and other offices.

I was full capacity in a week and have been full since. Group is busy, work was similar and my team was v welcoming.

It took me a good 4-5 months to really settle in after lateralling and pick up a full, healthy plate of work.

Are you happy with your company’s women leadership programs? I have just switched jobs, and the new place has nothing in place internally although markets it as something they could help their clients with, which to me seems hypocritical. Also, on the c-suite team there are 5 older males and one female, all white. This is a global organization. I guess I’m super disappointed and have not realized how important it is to me until I joined a place that doesn’t care about it. What would you do?

Has anyone left ID, then gone back and then left again? I left ID a year ago to do L&E. I enjoy this area of law a lot, but my firm is mega toxic and there's 0 chance of growth here. I have the opportunity to work with an incredible partner/mentor I worked with when I did ID, but at a different ID firm. I will be given resources and assistance to develop whatever practice area of law I want and the firm wants to expand to employment law. Is this worth the risk of getting stuck in ID again?
